VIRGINIA WATER, England (PA) -- Luke Donald is out of this week's French Open as he bids to recover from the wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from the U.S. Open. Donald was tied for 23rd after 14 holes of the final round at Torrey Pines when he had his left wrist strapped by medics before deciding not to continue.
The world No. 18, with ground to make up in the European Ryder Cup race if he is not going to rely on a wild card pick from Captain Nick Faldo, took last week off rather than play in the BMW International in Munich, and now he is giving the wrist another week's rest.
Ian Poulter, who also withdrew from the German event after quitting the U.S. Open with wrist trouble on the opening day, remains on the entry list for Paris.
But Jose Maria Olazabal, who has not played since missing the BMW PGA Championship cut for the first time in his career a month ago, also has pulled out of the French Open.
In March, the two-time Masters champion returned from seven months out battling rheumatism, but in six events since he has been suffering from fatigue.
The 42-year-old, Nick Faldo's assistant for September's Ryder Cup, is next due in action in the upcoming British Open qualifier at Sunningdale. But since that is 36 holes in one day, there must be a huge doubt whether he will play. He missed the British Open last year with a knee injury.
"I am not myself and I don't know what to do," Olazabal said at Wentworth. "I am trying my best, but my brain is not there. My brain is fried."
"There is nothing medically wrong with him -- at least we hope there isn't," said his manager, Sergio Gomez. "He has had every kind of test under the sun. Two doctors want him to stop the medication he's on, one wants him to continue.
"I have told him that I think he should stop playing golf until he has regained his strength. He can't carry on like this."
HARRINGTON STARS IN FILM: British Open champion Padraig Harrington has taken a lead role in a film -- to promote good etiquette in golf.
"Good etiquette promotes enjoyment of the game for all players," said Harrington. "I am very pleased to play a part in the education process for new golfers, young and old alike."
David Rickman, director of rules for the Royal and Ancient Club, stated: "Padraig is a role model for good behavior, on and around the golf course. This film will help new players to understand the true meaning of sportsmanship in golf."
There are also contributions from several other European Tour professionals including Nick Dougherty, Lee Westwood and Paul Casey, as well as archive material from the British Open, Ryder Cup and Women's British Open.
The 10-minute film is now available as a free download from the R&A Web site and will be promoted to national golfing bodies around the world as a teaching aid.
ELS TO CHANGE CADDIES: Ernie Els has decided to make a change of caddie in the build-up to the British Open, ending an 18-month partnership with Irishman J.P. Fitzgerald.
There is speculation that he could be back with long-time caddie Ricci Roberts, with whom he won not only at Muirfield in 2002, but also two U.S. Opens. But he has not yet announced his choice.
The world No. 3 is many people's favorite for Royal Birkdale now that Tiger Woods is out. His British Open record includes one win and three seconds and in the last two years he has finished third and fourth.
Els is next in action at the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond on July 10-13, the week before his bid for a fourth major.
