AVENTURA, Fla. -- The LPGA Tour returns to southern Florida this week for the inaugural Stanford International Pro-Am, hosted at Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club. The $2 million event is also the fourth Winner Event in the first half of LPGA Playoffs 2008, which means the winner automatically advances to the 32-player field at the season-ending ADT Championship.
Within the 72-hole event is a 54-hole stroke-play pro-am tournament. The field will play the first two rounds on both the Soffer and Miller Courses. A 36-hole cut will reduce the field to the top 70 professionals and low 20 teams. The team competition will end on Saturday, while on Sunday, the professionals will vie for the $300,000 winner's check.
The Stanford International Pro-Am is the first professional-amateur tournament on the LPGA schedule since the 2001 Office Depot at Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, Fla., which was won by Grace Park.
MORE RECORDS FOR OCHOA: Lorena Ochoa etched her name into yet another category of the LPGA Tour's record book with her three-stroke victory at the Ginn Open on Sunday. With the win, Ochoa tied the LPGA Tour record for most consecutive wins in scheduled events with four; her 16-under total also shattered the Ginn Open 72-hole scoring record of 12 under set by Mi Hyun Kim I 2006.
Other players with four consecutive wins include Mickey Wright in 1962; Mickey Wright again in 1963; Kathy Whitworth in 1969; and Annika Sorenstam in 2001.
ROOKIE RACE: Although Yani Tseng notched her second second-place finish of the year at the Ginn Open, it wasn't quite enough to overcome Na-Yeon Choi's lead in the 2008 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year race. Choi's tie for 17th place credited her with 36 points in the race, bringing her total to 378, giving her a 37-point lead over Tseng, who earned 80 points for a total of 341 points. MasterCard Classic champion Louise Friberg rounds out the top three with 220 points.
MILESTONES FOR PETTERSEN: With her third-place finish at the Ginn Open, Suzann Pettersen surpassed the $3 million mark in official career LPGA Tour earnings. She has won $3,126,604 since her rookie season in 2003.
HOPE HONORED WITH BERG AWARD: LPGA honorary member Dolores Hope, wife of the late entertainer Bob Hope, is the recipient of the 2008 Patty Berg Award in recognition of her many contributions to women's golf. The award, first awarded in 1979, is named in honor of LPGA Founder and Hall of Famer Patty Berg.
Mrs. Hope, who has supported the LPGA since its founding in 1950, directed a $1 million gift to The LPGA Foundation Financial Assistance Fund in 2007, which assists the members of the LPGA and others within the golf industry who need financial assistance because of serious illness, injury, loss of income or other significant hardship. In recognition of the donation, The LPGA Foundation renamed the fund the Dolores Hope LPGA Financial Assistance Initiative, leaving a lasting legacy for Hope and her immense support of the LPGA.
Throughout the years, the Hopes welcomed LPGA members to their home in the Palm Springs area when the LPGA was in town for the Kraft Nabisco Championship and competed with the players in various pro-ams to bring attention and awareness to the LPGA Tour. Mrs. Hope also enjoyed an amateur golf career that brought her to the tee with some of the LPGA's best players in the early days of the LPGA; she competed as an amateur in a number of the LPGA's events in the early 1950s.
The Patty Berg Award is given to an individual who, like Berg, exemplifies diplomacy, sportsmanship, goodwill and contributions to the game of golf. Past recipients include Betsy Rawls, Dinah Shore, Karsten Solheim, Judy Rankin, Louise Suggs, Pat Bradley, Patty Sheehan and Annika Sorenstam.
POWELL HONORED: Veteran LPGA Tour member, PGA Professional and LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Honorary Member Renee Powell was honored by the Black Women In Sport Foundation on April 19 in Kansas City, Mo. Powell, who is one of three African-American women to have competed on the LPGA Tour, was honored alongside Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, the last remaining woman to play in the Negro Leagues; Wendy Hilliard, the first African-America rhythmic gymnast; and Cynthia Cooper, Olympic and WNBA champion.
LET'S MAKE A DEAL: Erica Blasberg and Taylor Leon have increased their sponsorship portfolios by entering sponsorship agreements with SKLZ and Brooks Brothers, respectively.
Four-year Tour member and former University of Arizona standout Blasberg will represent SKLZ for the duration of the 2008 season.
A 2008 LPGA Tour rookie, Leon is Brooks Brothers' first-ever female brand ambassador for the Brooks Brothers Country Club Collection. Wearing the Brooks Brothers brand, Leon is also featured in the company's 2008 spring catalog.
