USC wins women's NCAA title with Arizona State's Munoz as medalist

- AP

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Arizona State's Azahara Munoz rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the first hole of sudden death Friday to win the NCAA women's golf individual championship over UCLA's Tiffany Joh.

In the team competition, Southern California removed most of the drama on the back nine of the University of New Mexico Championship Course, pulling away from the Bruins to win by six strokes.

The Trojans, who won their second team championship, finished with a 16-over 1,168.

"I can't believe it," said top USC player Belen Mozo. "Give me a few hours, then I might. What's disappointing is there's nobody left on campus to celebrate. School's out and everybody's left. I can't even enjoy too much because I'm getting on a plane (Saturday) to go back to Spain."

Munoz and Joh, who were playing in the same threesome, were within one stroke of each other all afternoon and finished the day as the only golfers under par with 1-under 287s.

Munoz handed Joh the lead with a bogey on the 12th hole, but Joh lipped out a putt on the 17th to give the stroke right back. Munoz had the chance to regain the advantage on that hole, but she missed a 4-footer.

On the 18th, Joh left her birdie putt just high of the pin, then watched as Munoz knocked in a 2-foot putt for par to force the extra hole.

They went back to play the 545-yard, par-5 18th again and after her second shot, Munoz had a 50-foot advantage thanks to a well-struck 3-wood.

"I like that club," Munoz said, explaining why she took the risk of using a fairway wood.

But her chip left her well short of the green, while Joh had a 10-footer that was pin high. Although Munoz had a straight-on putt with little break, she wasn't optimistic about making it, at least until she hit it.

"I usually don't make 25-footers," she said, tears rolling down her face.
