NORMAN, Okla. -- Jarin Todd of Sonoma State has been named the NCAA men's Division II winnner of the Jack Nicklaus Award. This is the second-straight season the junior has claimed the award. The Nicklaus Award is presented annually to the national players of the year in NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA.
Todd won three tournaments this season -- the St. Martin's Invitational, the WWU Invitational and the Stanslaus/Buzzini Invitational. He also placed runner-up four times and only placed outside of the top five three times. Todd did not finish outside of the top 10 in 12 events this season. He also led Division II in score vs. par and adjusted stroke average.
Todd will join Sam Cyr of Point Loma Nazarene (NAIA) and St. John Fisher's Scott Harris Jr. (Division III), as well as the Division I Nicklaus Award recipient, at Muirfield Village June 1 for the final round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, just outside Nicklaus' hometown of Columbus, to receive their trophies from Nicklaus. Additionally, a 20-player All-Nicklaus Team -- which will include outstanding players from NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA -- will be named June 10.
DIVISION II ARNOLD PALMER AWARD: Jeff Goff of USC-Aiken has claimed the Arnold Palmer Award presented by Callaway Golf. The Palmer Award is presented annually to the national championship medalists in men's golf in NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA.
Goff got off to a hot start at the national championship, carding five birdies en route to a 3-under first round. After a rocky start to his second round -- which included bogeys on three of his first seven holes -- Goff recorded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 to finish 1 over for the day and move to 2 under after two rounds. He played even par the third round to sit in second place entering the final day. Starting on No. 10 the final round, Goff parred the back nine and recorded three birdies and three bogeys on the front to hold on for medalist honors.
DIVISION II COACH OF THE YEAR: Steve Fell of West Florida has been honored as the Division II Eaton Golf Pride National Coach of the Year, the Golf Coaches Association of America has announced.
Fell has led the Argos to seven team titles this season, including the just completed NCAA Division II Championship. West Florida also won its last five tournaments of the season -- which in addition to the national crown -- included the championships of the Gulf South Conference and the NCAA Division II South Regional.
In 13 tournaments this season, Fell's squad only placed outside of the top four once -- its season opener at the Hartford Hawks Invitational where it finished sixth. Additionally, Argos Tobias Rosendahl and Kyle Scott were named PING First-Team All-America selections.
