Champions Tour Notebook: Haas leads Schwab Cup with one week to go

- PGA.com

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- After a strong finish last week at the AT&T Championship, Jay Haas is again atop the Charles Schwab Cup standings. He leads Fred Funk by 12 points as players enter the final tournament of the season, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Double points are available this week, and five players remain in mathematical contention. Besides Haas and Funk, Bernhard Langer, Eduardo Romero and John Cook still have a chance to win the Cup and the $1 million annuity.

Haas has 2,556 points, with Funk sitting at 2,544. Langer has 2,460 points, while Romero owns 2,032 points and John Cook holding 1,867 points.

STAYING ON IN SAN ANTONIO: AT&T Inc. has extended its sponsorship of the AT&T Championship and will continue hosting the Champions Tour event in San Antonio through 2014, tournanment officials have announced.

The announcement furthers the company's commitment to the San Antonio community after earlier this year announcing it had secured the naming rights of two new Tournament Players Club (TPC) golf courses -- the AT&T Oaks Course (designed by Greg Norman, with player consultant Sergio Garcia) and the AT&T Canyons Course (designed by Pete Dye with player consultant Bruce Lietzke).

AT&T said it anticipates moving the AT&T Championship to the TPC courses when they are ready for tournament play. The AT&T Oaks and Canyons courses and the adjacent 1,002-room JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa are scheduled to open in early 2010. As with all TPCs, TPC San Antonio will be built with the necessary infrastructure to host a professional golf tournament.

AUSTIN STOP GETS NEW SPONSOR: Triton Financial will become the new title sponsor of the Champions Tour event in Austin, Texas, through 2011, tournament officials have announced.

The tournament, formally known as the FedEx Kinko's Classic, will continue to be played at The Hills Country Club in the Austin suburb of Lakeway. The 2009 Triton Financial Classic will be held June 5-7 of next year.

Triton Financial is an Official Partner of the Heisman Trophy Trust and employs several Heisman Trophy winners and former NFL and collegiate athletes. Utilizing those relationships, Triton Financial plans to involve additional local and national sports celebrities in the Champions Tour.
