TADWORTH, England (AP) -- Ten days after he set the course record at Wentworth, Robert Dinwiddie birdied six of his last eight holes Monday to earn one of seven spots in the U.S. Open at sectional qualifying for Europe.

Alastair Forsyth and Ross Fisher each shot 7-under 137 over 36 holes on the New and Old courses at Walton Heath to share medalist honors. Dinwiddie, Phillip Archer and Ross McGowan finished at 138, while Johan Edfors and Thomas Levet got the final two spots in a playoff among four players.

The sectional qualifier was primarily for European Tour players, although nearly 20 withdrew over the weekend. Instead of 65 players competing for 10 spots, the USGA offered only seven spots for the 47 players who teed off.

Dinwiddie tied for fourth in the Wales Open, and a week earlier shot 63 in the BMW PGA Championship, although he failed to break 78 in his other three rounds at Wentworth. He closed out his string of birdies with an 8-footer on the final hole to avoid the playoff.

"An hour and a half ago I would never have believed it," Dinwiddie said.

Levet, who lost in a playoff to Ernie Els at the British Open in 2002, had a 3-foot putt on the final hole to avoid the playoff, but the putt didn't touch the hole. He still escaped and earned a trip to Torrey Pines.

Among those who failed to qualify were Rory McIlroy (145), Pablo Martin (145) and former Ryder Cup player Paul McGinley who shot 76 in his afternoon round and missed by seven shots.

Thomas Bjorn did not play, ending his streak of 11 consecutive U.S. Opens.
