European Tour Notebook: Garcia wins latest Shot of the Month award

- PGA.com

Sergio Garcia has won the European Tour Shot of the Month Award for October.

Playing at Club de Campo del Mediterraneo, the Spaniard's home course, he hit a second shot from a difficult lie, shaping it around trees and onto the eighth green for a birdie 4.

The shot ensured Garcia was not caught on the final round and he went on to claim victory in the Castello Masters.

Second place went to England's Steve Webster, who chipped in from thick rough at the seventh hole on the last day of the Portugal Masters, while a deft chip from South African Charl Schwartzel in the final round of the Madrid Masters secured him third place.

TOUR SIGNS NEW DEAL: The European Tour has signed a four-year deal with UPS to sponsor six events on the international schedule and also provide transportation and logistical support.

Included in that sponsorship deal is the Tour's flagship tournament, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in May.

"We are delighted to have UPS as our official logistics and express sponsor and we look forward to working with them at events across the world in what is an exciting new era for the European Tour," said European Tour Chief Executive George O'Grady.

LAURELS FOR LAWRIE: Paul Lawrie's golf foundation, which supports junior golf in the northeast of Scotland, has been given a $38,000 grant by the Royal and Ancient Club.

"I would never have won the Open at Carnoustie without putting in countless hours of practice," said Lawrie, whose only major victory came at the 1999 Open. "I hope the Foundation will instill in these juniors a similar level of commitment in all aspects of their lives."

The R&A also supports junior program in Carnoustie and St. Andrews.

"Supporting junior golf here in Scotland, where we are based, is a key aspect of the R&A's work," said R&A Director of Golf Development Duncan Weir.
