This week, the 23rd PGA Cup will take place at The Oconee Course at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga. The PGA Cup will pit the top PGA Professionals of the United States against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland in both team and individual competition. This premier event, similar to the PGA's Ryder Cup that uses TOUR professionals from both sides of the Atlantic, demands a top venue for competition. PGA.com talked with Mike Davenport, the PGA Head Professional at The Oconee Course to talk about what the players can expect as they start competition this week.
PGA.com: Mike, tell me what the participants of the PGA Cup can expect from your course as they tee it up this week.
Davenport: It's a great course. This is a Rees Jones design that opened in 2002. There are a number of holes that offer a great lake view, others that have other types of water in play - creeks, waterfalls, ponds. There is some elevation change, both from hole-to-hole and within some holes, and some natural rolling terrain. There is some slope in each of the greens. The course is in great shape. It's a very scenic course and I know that the players will be impressed.
PGA.com: You are hosting a premier event for your organization and your colleagues within the PGA. Does that add any added pressure or significance to you as opposed to other events you guys host?
Davenport: I see it as a real honor and an opportunity. We are all real excited to welcome the PGA and the team from overseas. We view this as a chance to show off what we think is one of the premier golf destinations in the country, to offer some real Southern hospitality to our guests, to host what we know will be a great event for everyone. I'm very confident that people will leave here at the end of the week very impressed with our entire operation.
PGA.com: If one of the PGA Professionals came to you for some inside advice, what would you tell them?
Davenport: Well, that's one of the great things about our course. There really are no tricks to playing it, it pretty much lays out in front of you. If you keep it in the fairway, find the right quadrant of the green, you can score here. I guess if I had to tell them some advice, I'd suggest playing more aggressive because it's going to take birdies to win the holes out here.
PGA.com: Reynolds Plantation is often referred to as one of golf's great resort destinations. I just read that it was listed in one big survey as "The Best of the Best Golf Community." Why is it so great?
Davenport: Well, it's a combination of factors. One, each of the courses here is the work of one of golf's premier designers. We have our course which was designed by Rees Jones. We also have courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Bob Cupp, Tom Fazio, and Jim Engh. That's an all-star team right there. The amenities offered here are outstanding. Having the Ritz-Carlton on property is a big asset. The customer service a visitor gets is as good as you'll find anywhere. We really believe in Southern hospitality. The aesthetics that you'll find here, the beautiful lake with the tall pines and the lush fairways, everything just fits the eye really well. We are very proud of what we offer our guests and when people provide us feedback after a visit, it certainly validates what we are trying to offer.
PGA.com: With such high-profile courses here, is there much of an intra-squad rivalry between the facilities? Any competition in terms of what events you host or memberships or anything like that?
Davenport: Not really. All the courses here offer a very high level of service and a top-notch product, but each has its own identity as well. They are all different and unique. We see the whole complex as complimentary of each of its parts. It's a great team here.
PGA.com: Atlanta just hosted THE TOUR Championship at East Lake, one of the country's premier layouts. Augusta National has a little tournament each Spring that we all know and love. You are located about halfway in between at one of golf's top destination resorts. Is this stretch of I-20 the greatest 120 miles in golf?
Davenport: Well, it's definitely a great place to be. We are fortunate in so many ways, with our location, weather, and proximity to some great golf cities.
