Local Knowledge: EDS Byron Nelson and the TPC Four Seasons

- PGA.com

The PGA Tour is visiting a brand new course this week as they once again visit the TPC Four Seasons at Los Colinas. Wait, what? That doesn't make much sense, does it? Well it does if you consider that the EDS Byron Nelson Championship has undergone a total $10 million renovation of the Los Colinas course and the tournament will be held solely on one course this year for the first time since 1994. PGA.com's John Kim talked with PGA Director of Golf Paul Earnest about the changes to the course while upholding the excellence of the Byron Nelson legacy.

PGA.com: Once again, the EDS Byron Nelson is being held at the TPC Four Seasons Course at Los Colinas, but the Tour players will actually be in for a very new experience. Only one course and a practically totally different course from what they are used to, right?

Earnest: It is going to be a very different course for them. The routing of the holes is still pretty much the same but practically everything else is different. We basically bulldozed and put the course back together. We've created new tee boxes, new sightlines, changed bunkers, altered mounding, really everything. I'd say it was more of a golf course construction rather than a reconstruction. The old course was very good, but this new course takes it to a new level.

PGA.com: How does the legacy of Byron Nelson manifest itself throughout the year at your course and even more, throughout the week of the tournament.

Earnest: His footprint and legacy are always with us. The relationships that he formed with the club members is something that will resonate here forever. The manner and integrity and class that he displayed towards everyone is something we will all try to emulate in some way. We have a Hall of Champions that celebrates many of his accomplishments on the course, and they deserve to be honored, but his influence on us as humans I have to admire and hold in the highest esteem. As for this week, the tournament is the embodiment of a tribute to him. The Byron Nelson Prize was awarded this week for the second time, I just returned from the ceremony where Ken Venturi was honored. It is an award presented to someone who represents the principles and ideals of Byron Nelson. (Tom Lehman was the first winner.) The Salesmanship Club of Dallas does an excellent job of making sure that this tournament is run and presented in a way that represents the highest levels of class and sportsmanship just as Byron Nelson did.

PGA.com: Speaking of The Salesmanship Club of Dallas, is it true that the tournament is still the largest fundraiser on Tour? That says a lot about the support of the community for golf and this tournament.

Earnest: As far as I know, it still is. Last year the organization raised $6.4 million for local Dallas charities and to date, it has raised over $100 million dollars. That's really amazing and a great source of pride for the community. So everyone gets behind the tournament, comes out and supports it as fans, volunteers, really it's overwhelming.

PGA.com: And what's this I hear about this being the favorite event of caddies on Tour this year?

Earnest: It's true. EDS is a wonderful sponsor and they are very good at being creative and finding unique ways to promote the tournament. One of their initiatives this year is to profile their role in supporting other organizations achieve their goals -- much like a caddie on the Tour works to support their player. So this year, the tournament is sponsoring a "Caddy for a Caddie" where the caddie of the winning player will get a new Cadillac. That's a pretty good deal.

PGA.com: That's amazing. What about the Cadillac for their favorite media writer?

Earnest: [laughter] Maybe next year.
