Even after retirement, Sorenstam will remain involved in Ginn Tribute

- AP

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Annika Sorenstam's decision to retire won't change her involvement in the Ginn Tribute, the tournament the LPGA Tour star will host in two weeks.

"Being the hostess and being a part of the game is something I'm going to continue in the future," said Sorenstam, who announced Tuesday that she would step away from the LPGA Tour after this season. "So nothing is changing as far as I know, not from my end, anyway."

The Ginn Tribute is in its second year at RiverTowne Country Club, and has at least two more years to run at its home just outside of Charleston.

Tournament Director Becky Newell expects Sorenstam to be just as, if not more, involved in building the Ginn Tribute once she finishes with the LPGA Tour.

"There are so many other icons that host golf tournaments. We look at Nancy Lopez. We look at Arnold Palmer," Newell said.

Part of the Ginn Tribute's purpose is to celebrate those who built women's golf. A year ago, the tournament honored six of the LPGA's founding members. The upcoming event will honor LPGA Hall of Famer Beth Daniel, a South Carolina native who's the captain of next year's U.S. Solheim Cup team.
