HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. -- Seon Hwa Lee's third career victory at the Ginn Tribute landed her an automatic trip to November's ADT Championship and the opportunity to win $1 million at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Her nine-stroke, come-from-behind win also was the second-largest comeback victory in LPGA history. Mickey Wright was the first to overcome a 10-stroke deficit for victory at the 1964 Tall City Open, and subsequently 10-shot comebacks have been achieved by Annika Sorenstam at the 2001 Office Depot and by Louise Fribrg at the 2008 MasterCard Classic.
PARK SIGNS UP: LPGA Tour rookie Hee Young Park has signed a three-year sponsorship deal with Hana Financial Group, the parent company of Hana Bank. As part of the agreement, Park will wear the Hana Bank logo.
MONEY MILESTONES: With her victory at the recent Sybase Classic, Lorena Ochoa became the fastest LPGA player to cross the $12 million mark in career earnings. Her $300,000 share of the $2 million purse boosted her across the mark in 5 years, 2 months, 12 days, compared to Annika Sorenstam's previous record of 9 years, 4 months, 4 days.
In addition at Sybase Classic, reigning U.S. Women's Open champion Cristie Kerr crossed the $8 million mark in career earnings, and putds her 10th all-time in the LPGA Tour record books. And at the recent Corning Classic, Mi Hyun Kim became the 11th player to earn more than $8 million in her career, and Mhairi McKay crossed the $2 million mark.
BLUMENHERST WINS SHORE AWARD: Duke University's Amanda Blumenherst recently received the 2008 Dinah Shore Trophy Award. The award recognizes a female collegiate golfer who excels in both academics (3.2 on a 4.0 scale) and athletics -- playing in at least 50 percent of the team's scheduled events -- while maintaining a 78.00 or less scoring average.
A junior majoring in history with an English minor, Blumenherst has maintained a 3.775 overall grade point average while competing for the Blue Devils in every event for which she has been eligible.
COSTLY BREAK: Lorena Ochoa earned $300,000 for her sixth victory of the year at the Sybase Classic, which should help her pay a $25,000 fine for skipping the recent Corning Classic.
The LPGA Tour has a "1-in-4" rule, meaning players must compete in every full-field event on the schedule at least once every four years. Ochoa has not played Corning since 2004, when she tied for 19th.
The Mexican star felt she had no choice. She is defending champion at eight tournaments this year, the LPGA Tour added another tournament in Mexico and Corning is right before a buildup into the majors.
GOING TO CHINA: The LPGA Tour will stage its first-ever event in China this fall, Tour officials have announced. The Grand China Air LPGA is set for Oct. 24-26 at the Haikou West Golf Club in Hainan's capital, Haikou.
This is the LPGA tournament to be played in China and the tournament was specifically developed by the China Golf Association, the LPGA and IMG, which will promote the event.
The $1.8 million event will feature a field of 63 players. The field will include the top 51 ranked available players on the LPGA money list as of Sept. 14 plus 12 invited players to be decided by the CGA, Grand China Air and IMG.
Haikou West Golf Club, built three years ago, was designed by Perry Dye and is located on the west side of Haikou City, 30 minutes from the Haikou Meilan International Airport. The course offers breezes from the South China Sea, a Haikou City backdrop and international level facilities including double-level driving range and first-class dining experience.
