Kendall leads Nationwide's weather-interrupted Bank of America Open

- PGA.com

GLENVIEW, Ill. -- Skip Kendall braved the elements on Friday on his way to a stellar 7-under 65 and in the process surged to the clubhouse lead at the Nationwide Tour's $750,000 Bank of America Open.

On a day in which winds tested everything not nailed down, Kendall somehow managed a bogey-free round -- moving to 11-under 133 and a two-stroke cushion over Kris Blanks (70).

"Even if I were playing in calm conditions, I would take 65 around here in a minute," said Kendall, who hit 11 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens in regulation. "It is a shock to me. I guess the ball didn't know it was windy out there."

Thunderstorms hovered over The Glen Club early in the day and forced a 90-minute delay to the beginning of play. Second-round action began at 8:30 a.m. local time, but only for 98 minutes before more inclement weather sent the players to shelter. When play began for the second time, winds howling to 48 miles per hour greeted the contestants.

"I didn't think we would go back out there," said Kendall, who ended his round well before darkness finally suspended play at 8:07 p.m. "It had to be blowing 50 miles per hour. Put it this way. I was hitting full 6-irons to the first flag on the driving range which is 90 yards away. I was hitting a flip lob-wedge there this morning."

Inclement weather in Chicago isn't anything new for Kendall. In addition to extremely windy and cold conditions during Tuesday's practice round, Kendall attended Media Day for the Bank of America Open in late April and braved temperatures hovering in the mid-30s, not to mention rain showers that eventually turned to snow showers. Despite that, Kendall braved six holes with several local media members before finally calling it quits.

"I left the course (without playing) after only 30 minutes on Tuesday and it wasn't nearly as bad as media day," said Kendall, a 43-year-old native of Milwaukee, Wis.

Kendall's day got off to a bang when a holed wedge shot from 94 yards led to an eagle on the par-5 first hole. It was a sign of things to come, as he added birdies on Nos. 5, 14 & 18 for a combined 5-under total on the par 5s at The Glen Club.

"That is exactly what we had talked about with my team coming into the week," said Kendall. "I missed the cut last week by one shot and I played the eight par 5s in even par. That is a big deal for me this week."

First-round leader Kyle Reifers, who didn't begin his round until 7:10 p.m., stood at 9 under through four holes when play was finally called for the day. Matt Weibring (through 11 holes) is three shots back at 8 under.

Second-Round News & Notes: Play was delayed for 90 minutes at the beginning of the day due to thunderstorms in the area. After beginning at 8:30 a.m., play was suspended at 10:08 a.m. due to a dangerous situation. At 12:53 p.m., play resumed under extremely windy conditions, including wind gusts up to 48 mph. Another delay occurred at 5:35 p.m. due to a dangerous situation and resumed at 6:30 p.m. In all, play was suspended for a total of 5 hours and 10 minutes. ... The seventy-six players who didn't finish their second round will be back in position at 7:30 Saturday morning. Third-round tee times will run from approximately noon until 2:00 p.m. ... Players are being allowed to use lift, clean and place during the second round. ... Dicky Pride withdrew prior to the start of his second round, while Kyle Thompson (77) withdrew following the round. Jason Enloe and Garth Mulroy withdrew during the round.
