SANDY, Utah -- In 1873 Brigham Young named Sandy City for its thirsty soil. That same year, the railroad tracks were constructed connecting Sandy to Salt Lake City. Brendon Todd may be on track for his first Nationwide Tour victory if he keeps playing the way he is at the Utah Championship.
Todd (65) made it to the clubhouse at 18-under 195 on Saturday and is one stroke ahead of overnight leader Marc Leishman (68), who bogeyed No. 17 after taking a penalty when his tee shot lodged between two tree trunks. Todd's total is a new 54-hole tournament record.
Kyle Thompson (68) is third at 16-under 197 after making only two bogeys in the tournament, both at the par-three second hole. Jonathan Fricke (64) is alone in fourth at 13-under 200.
Tied for fifth at 12-under 201 are Rob Grube (63), Jimmy Walker (65), Jeff Curl (67), and Bubba Dickerson (67).
Six players are tied for ninth at 11-under 202, including Roger Tambellini, who was voted as having the best mustache in a week that has become known as "mustache week."
"I've played great all three days," said Todd, the tall Georgian rookie. "Today I was able to stay patient and eliminate the bogeys."
When his clubs were stolen on a flight to Canada, Todd tried several random putters for about five weeks until Scotty Cameron re-made the putter he lost. The good vibes returned when he started using the putter in Wichita a couple of weeks ago. With that equation solved, he and his new caddie have been doing a good job of adjusting to the altitude in Utah.
"In the mornings and evenings, it's a 5% difference. In the middle of the day it's a full 10%," said Todd, who has four top-10s and is 53rd on the money list. "This is a great course for me."
Leishman won the 2006 Jisan Resort Open on the Korean PGA Tour by an emphatic 10 shots after opening with an 11-under-par 61. After making birdies on all the par 5s except one during the first two rounds, the Australian played them only 1 under Saturday.
Thompson, a PGA TOUR member, came here to shake off the rust after a two-week break.
"This is exactly what I wanted to do. Get a little confidence and carry it over to the PGA TOUR," said the 29-year-old Thompson.
Fricke, a Georgia native who won the Sportsmanship Award at Georgia State University, made eight birdies and a bogey at the ninth hole when he found the water hazard left of the green but managed to get it up and down after a penalty drop.
"I chipped and putted as good as I ever have and I'm killing the par 5s, which you have to do around here," said Fricke, who hit 13 greens and had 24 putts.
Fricke, 91st on the money list, was one of four players who holed-in-one during the first round. He has played the par-5 holes in 15 under par this week, including 13 birdies, one eagle and one par.
Grube's 8-under 63 equaled the 18-hole tournament record. The Palo Alto, Calif., resident who attended Stanford University finally got some conditions that suited him.
"I had the last tee time on Thursday and I was late in the morning on Friday so I didn't get the best of the greens," said the 23-year-old Monday qualifier. "We moved quickly today because we had a single in front of us and we had great greens and perfect weather."
A top-25 finish will exempt Grube into next week's Albertsons Boise Open.
