St. John Fisher's Harris heads list of 2008 honorees in NCAA Div. III

- PGA.com

DULUTH, Ga. -- St. John Fisher's Scott Harris, Jr., has been named the recipient of the Jack Nicklaus Award for Division III. The Nicklaus is presented annually to the national players of the year in NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA.

Harris had six victories this season, including the Division III NCAA Championship. His other wins came at the SLU Men's Invitational, Nazareth Hobart Invitational, ECAC Upstate Championship, Mid-Atlantic Region Championship and the Fred B. Kravetz Invitational. He also had three other top-10 finishes this season and finished outside the top 10 only once.

"I was very surprised to win the Nicklaus Award," said James. "It's good to be recognized but surprising. It shows how good I can play and gives me confidence."

The three other Nicklaus Award recipients will be named immediately following the final round of each respective national championship. All four Nicklaus Award honorees will be invited to Muirfield Village for the final round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, just outside Nicklaus' hometown of Columbus to receive their trophies from Mr. Nicklaus.

Additionally, a 20-player All-Nicklaus Team -- which will include outstanding players from NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA -- will be named June 10.

PHIL MICKELSON AWARD: Chase Rogers of Huntingdon has been honored as the Phil Mickelson Award presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation winner as the most outstanding freshman in Division III men's golf.

Pacific's Max Bonk, Brad Cieslinski of Washington & Jefferson, Mount Union's Lucas Murray, Bradley Roche of Hamilton, and Grant Shafranski of St. Thomas round out the All-Freshman Team.

Rogers -- the All-Freshman Team's selection from the South Region -- finished in the top 10 six times this season, including two runner-up finishes. Bonk represented the West, Cieslinski the Mid-Atlantic, Murray the Great Lakes, Roche the Northeast, and Shafranski the Central.

"It's a huge honor," Rogers said of the Mickelson Award. "I wanted to have a good year, but didn't expect this. The fact that I'm left handed makes it even better trying to follow in Phil's footsteps."

ARNOLD PALMER AWARD: Scott Harris, Jr., of St. John Fisher has claimed the Arnold Palmer Award presented by Callaway Golf for Division III. The Palmer Award is presented annually to the national championship individual medalists.

This was the sixth victory of the season for Harris, who was also named to the All-America First Team and the Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team. "It's a big deal," said Harris of winning the Palmer Award. "He (Palmer) is one of the best golfers of all time."

NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR: St. John Fisher's Bob Simms was honored as the Division III Eaton Golf Pride National Coach of the Year. Eaton Golf Pride Regional Coaches of the Year have also been named.

Simms led his St. John Fisher team to a successful season, including a third-place finish at the Division III NCAA National Championship. Three Cardinals players earned All-America honors, and Scott Harris, Jr. was named the National Player of the Year.

"I'm stunned," Simms said of his award. "What makes a good coach are good players."

Simms was the Mid Atlantic Region's coach of the year, while Bob Alpers of St. John's (Minn.) was honored for the Central, Methodist's Steve Conley in the South, Rex Huigens of La Verne for the West, Rick Pohle of Williams in the Northeast and Ohio Wesleyan's Jon Whithaus represented the Great Lakes.
