Southern Cal and UCLA share lead after Day 3 of NCAA women's finals

- AP

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Arizona State's Azahara Munoz shot a 1-over 73 Thursday to take the lead after three rounds of the NCAA Division I women's national championship golf tournament.

Munoz's three-day total of 2-under 214 leapfrogged her over best friend Belen Mozo of Southern California. After a 3-over 75, Mozo is tied for second with Tiffany Joh of UCLA.

"It's pretty cold," Munoz said, bundled in a headband and windbreaker. "I didn't bring anything warm. I'm borrowing everything."

USC and UCLA shot 8 over Thursday, leaving both teams tied at 16 over for the tournament.

More than 20 golfers were still on the course at 8:05 p.m. when play was halted due to darkness. They will finish their rounds Friday morning, when the entire field starts an hour later based on results from Thursday.

Some of the golfers started the day by finishing up their second round before a shotgun start in the afternoon was delayed by a coming storm.

When the storm didn't immediately materialize, play started. It was halted after just 15 minutes because of lightning. Golfers were forced to sit through a 65-minute delay before resuming play.

Denver's Katie Kempter said they passed the time by playing word games and telling jokes. She said the Arizona State, USC and UCLA golfers know each other well from playing in the same conference.

"We were kind of like the add-ons," she said of the Denver golfers. "But we had a lot of fun waiting for the rain to end."
