Stroke-play qualifying ends at U.S. Mid-Amateur and Women's Mid-Am

- AP

RIVER HILLS, Wis. (AP) -- Richard Berkmeyer earned the top match-play spot in the U.S. Mid-Amateur, shooting a 1-over 71 at Milwaukee Country Club on Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Tim Mickelson in stroke-play qualifying.

Berkmeyer, from St. Louis, had a 2-under 138 total. He opened with a 67 on Saturday at Brown Deer Park. Mickelson, the younger brother of PGA Tour star Phil Mickelson, shot a 70, also at Milwaukee Country Club. He's from San Diego.

"I've played well all summer, and I'm pretty pleased," the 34-year-old Berkmeyer said. "My game has gotten better as I've gotten older. Hopefully, it will get better this week. I feel now like I belong and I'm more comfortable out here. This is my favorite event. This is what I play for."

Tim Jackson, the 1994 and 2001 winner from Germantown, Tenn., had a 75 at Brown Deer Park to tie for third with Derek Bell of Duvall, Wash., at even par. Bell shot a 70 at MCC, the site of the 64-man, match-play competition.

The tournament is open to amateurs 25 years old or older.

Meanwhile in Ann Arbor, Mich., Wendi Patterson-Golden shot a 2-under 70 on Sunday to top the 64 match-play qualifiers in the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.

Patterson-Golden, from Sarasota, Fla., had a 2-under 142 total on the 6,189-yard Donald Ross-designed Barton Hills Country Club course.

After playing professionally from 1996-2000, she regained her amateur status two years ago. She coaches the Braden River High School girls' team in Bradenton.

"Yesterday, I played flawlessly and left five or six shots out on the course," she said. "I missed five putts inside of 15 feet. Today, I chunked it five times and still got up and down. I was confident with my putter."

Kathy Hartwiger, the 2002 winner from Birmingham, Ala., shot a 73 to finish a stroke back. Canada's Mary Anne Lapointe, the 2005 winner, shot a 72 to finish third at 1 over.

Virginia Grimes, the 1998 winner from Meridian, Miss., grabbed the fourth spot in match play, shooting a 75 for a 2-over total.

Two-time defending champion Meghan Bolger of Oakland Park, Fla., followed her opening 75 with a 73 to qualify seventh at 4 over.

The tournament is open to amateurs 25 years old or older.
