After bypassing the Senior PGA Championship in 1963, his first year of eligibility, legendary Sam Snead made his debut in the Championship memorable at the new PGA National Golf Club, now known as BallenIsles Country Club, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Snead opened the Championship with an eagle on the first hole on the East Course and was never caught. His winning 9-under-par 279 total was the first of what would become a record six Senior PGA Championships. John Barnum, who finished three strokes behind, was runner-up for the second straight year.
