May again designated as PGA Free Lesson Month across America

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Celebrating its 11th anniversary, PGA Free Lesson Month is designed to reach new golfers and help existing golfers improve their game with free, 10-minute golf lessons conducted by participating PGA Professionals nationwide throughout the month of May.

PGA Free Lesson Month is a growth-of-the-game initiative among The PGA of America, Golf Digest, The Golf Channel, Golf For Women and Golf World. The PGA of America and Golf Digest launched the successful campaign in 1998 and more than 832,000 free lessons have been given by PGA and LPGA Professionals nationwide in the last 10 years.

Quick Facts from 2007:

• More than 6,630 PGA and LPGA Professionals gave 115,500 free lessons during PGA Free Lesson Month at 5,353 facilities nationwide in the 10th year of the program.

• Of the 115,500 consumers, 24 percent of participating golfers were new or beginners; 56 percent of the free lessons given were to new customers; 30 percent of participants were women and 12 percent of participants were juniors.

• PGA Free Lesson Month had a positive economic impact for both the golf industry and host facilities. The golf industry realized a financial impact of $6.1 million dollars with host facilities reporting a median of $2,472 in revenues generated from golfers following their participation in PGA Free Lesson Month.

• Golf Digest Publications has teamed with The PGA of America since the campaign's inception in 1998. PGA Free Lesson Month is covered in Golf Digest, Golf For Women, Golf World and GolfDigest.com to a combined audience of nearly 10 million readers.

• The Golf Channel completed its fifth year as a partner communicating the PGA Free Lesson Month message to more than 75 million viewers.

• Nike Golf supplied prizes for the Sweepstakes winners for the fifth consecutive year.

What Can You Learn in a 10-Minute Lesson?
According to Golf Digest, here are a few things you can learn in 10 minutes:

--How to hone the correct path of the three arcs of the backswing using a driver: (shoulders, arms and club)

--How to control the face of your wedge as it goes through the sand

--How to hit higher, softer shots from the sand when there isn't much room between the edge of the bunker and flag

--How to hit lower, running shots from the sand when there is a lot of green to work with

--How to develop a good touch and feel for the proper speed of a putt

--How to read the effects of slope on roll for a putt

--How to aim your ball more accurately when putting

--How to develop a trigger to switch your focus from line to speed before you make your putting stroke
