Past Junior PGA Champion Park earns her first major championship

- PGA.com

With her victory in at the 2008 U.S. Women's Open, In-Bee Park of Henderson, Nev., became the third girls' division winner of the Junior PGA Championship to also earn a major championship.

Park joins a select group that includes Cristie Kerr Scottsdale, Ariz., winner of the 1995 Junior PGA Championship and the 2007 U.S. Women's Open; and Grace Park of Scottsdale, winner of the 1996 Junior PGA Championship and the 2004 Kraft Nabisco Championship.

In-Bee Park is a two-time winner of the Junior PGA Championship. In 2001 at Westfield Group Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio, she shared the event record for the youngest girls' champion and became just the fifth international champion in the history of the Championship.

In 2002, Park won her second consecutive title at Westfield Group Country Club. She fired an impressive final round 5-under-par 66 to win by nine strokes over Jenny Suh of Fairfax, Va.

PGA Professional Joe Hallett of Orlando, Fla., has worked with Park since she turned professional and noted that she has what it takes to continue collecting major titles. "She is a special young lady with such poise, humbleness and control, it's unreal," said Hallett.

The Junior PGA Championship has also produced two major championship winners from the boys' division. Trevor Immelman won the 1996 Junior PGA Championship and the 2008 Masters, while David Toms won the 1984 Junior PGA Championship and captured the 2001 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth, Ga.

Begun in 1976, the Junior PGA Championship has traditionally produced unforgettable golf performances and brings together the best junior golfers from around the country to compete for the Jack Nicklaus Trophy in the Boys' division and the Patty Berg Trophy in the Girls' division.

The PGA of America announced in December that the 33rd Junior PGA Championship will be contested Aug. 13-16 at The TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio.
