
MAINEVILLE, Ohio -- The 2008 United States Junior Ryder Cup Team was announced Saturday after the conclusion of the 33rd Junior PGA Championship at TPC River's Bend.
The final two spots on the team were granted to the winner and runner-up in both the Junior PGA Championship's Boys' and Girls' Divisions: Boys' Champion Anthony Paolucci of Dallas, Texas; Boys' runner-up Jordan Spieth of Dallas, Texas; Girls' Champion Danielle Frasier; and Girls' runner-up Sarah Brown of Phillipsburg, N.J.
The Junior Ryder Cup will be contested against the European Junior Ryder Cup Team, at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky. Sept. 15-16.
"Anytime you get to represent your country and play in the Junior Ryder Cup, it is an honor," said Paolucci, who will be competing for the first time in the competition. "I am excited to play on the American team this year."
Frasier, the 2008 girls' division Champion, agreed with Paolucci.
"I came here to make the Junior Ryder Cup team," said Frasier. "Winning the Junior PGA Championship was a huge bonus.
PGA of America Past President Ken Lindsay, the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team Captain, announced his two Captain's picks: Jeffrey Kang, 17, of Fullerton, Calif., on the boys' side, and Tiffany Lua, 17, of Rowland Heights, Calif., on the girls' side. Kang, who finished in a tie for third place in the 2008 Junior PGA Championship, also won the 2007 Mayakoba Junior Golf Classic. Lua, the No. 4-ranked golfer in the country, is the only U.S. Girl to make the cut at the 2008 U.S. Women's Open Championship.
"I want our team to have a great experience, but I also want to win," said Lindsay, who served as President of The PGA of America from 1997-1998. "This could be the first time many of the players have represented their country and I want to make it memorable."
Leading the boys' side will be Cameron Peck, 17, of Olympia, Wash., who is the No. 1-ranked junior golfer in the country. Peck has had an extremely successful golf season, with victories at the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur, HP Boys Championship and the 2008 FootJoy Invitational.
Joining Peck will be Cory Whitsett, 16, of Houston, Texas, who is the No. 2-ranked golfer in the country. Whitsett has had a very successful year, winning the 2007 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 2008 Western Junior and 2008 Rolex Tournament of Champions. He was also a 2007 Rolex First Team All-American.
Completing the boys' side of the team is Andrew Yun, of Chandler, Ariz.., who was a member of the 2006 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team. He is ranked No. 6 in the country and won the 2008 Verizon Junior Heritage.
Highlighting the girls' side will be Alexis Thompson, of Coral Springs, Fla., the No. 5 golfer in the country, who won the 2007 Junior PGA Championship and the 2008 U.S. Girls Junior Championship.
Joining Thompson will be Jennifer Johnson, 18, of LaQuinta, Calif.; and Erynne Lee, 15, of Silverdale, Wash. Johnson won the 2008 Rolex Tournament of Champions and was a 2007 Rolex First Team All-American. Lee won the 2008 Kathy Whitworth Invitational and tied for second place at the 2008 Rolex Girls Junior Championship.
Participants in the 2008 Junior Ryder Cup will play a nine-hole "friendship" match the day prior (Wednesday) to the start of the Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.. The matches will feature a mixed four-ball, with the U.S.A. competing against Europe for the six matches, which will continue to build international friendships.
