Past major champs Goosen and Furyk complete elite Grand Slam foursome

- PGA.com

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Retief Goosen and Jim Furyk, who have combined to win three U.S. Open Championships, will complete the premier foursome of major champions that will compete in the 26th PGA Grand Slam of Golf, to be conducted at Mid Ocean Club, Oct. 13-15, in Bermuda.

Goosen, winner of the 2001 and '04 U.S. Opens, will be making his third appearance in the season-ending showcase event, while Furyk, the 2003 U.S. Open Champion, is making his third consecutive Grand Slam appearance and fourth overall. Furyk won the 2003 PGA Grand Slam of Golf title, and was runner-up in 2006.

They will be joined by Masters Champion Trevor Immelman and Padraig Harrington, winner of the British Open and PGA Championship.

Goosen finished second in the 2008 Major Champions Points List behind Phil Mickelson, and Furyk was third. Mickelson could not compete in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf due to a scheduling conflict.

The alternate berths may be filled only by past major champions competing in the current year's major championships.

Goosen replaces reigning U.S. Open Champion Tiger Woods, who was sidelined for the remainder of the year following knee surgery. Furyk takes the spot that opened when Harrington captured two major championships.

Furyk finished third a year ago when the PGA Grand Slam of Golf made its debut at Mid Ocean Club, the first venue outside the U.S. to host the event.

"We anticipate another exciting PGA Grand Slam of Golf based on the high level of competitiveness between this year's foursome," said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. "Padraig Harrington and Jim Furyk have the advantage of course knowledge at Mid Ocean Club and we know that the island of Bermuda will turn out in force once again to support these major champions competing in of the most beautiful places in the world."

This season, Goosen collected 201.5 points on the Major Champions Points List after sharing 17th in the Masters, tying for 14th in the U.S. Open, and finishing tied for 32nd in the British Open and tied for 24th in the PGA Championship.

Furyk had 193.5 season-ending points after tying for fifth in the British Open; and tied for 29th in the PGA Championship, shared 33rd in the Masters and tied for 36th in the U.S. Open.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is a 36-hole event broadcast by TNT to an audience of 89 million U.S. homes along with an international audience of more than 100 countries in a prime-time telecast.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf purse is $1.35 million, with the winner receiving $600,000; second place $300,000; third place $250,000; and fourth place $200,000.
