Azinger names four captain's picks selections

By John L. Byrwa, Managing Editor- PGA.com

Sept. 2 -- NEW YORK CITY -- United States captain Paul Azinger completed his 12-man Ryder Cup roster Tuesday morning by selecting Steve Stricker, Hunter Mahan, J.B. Holmes and Chad Campbell.

Azinger, awarded four captains picks after the PGA of America granted his request to alter the selection process in November, 2006, has said he wanted the players who were playing the best to make up his squad.

Stricker, Mahan, Holmes and Campbell join the eight automatic qualifiers who made the team by virtue of their standing on the U.S. Ryder Cup Points List, which was finalized last month following the 90th PGA Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich. They included: Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Kenny Perry, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard, Ben Curtis and Boo Weekley.

Azinger will take a relatively inexperienced team to Valhalla in two weeks, with only six of his 12 members bringing any Ryder Cup experience -- Mickelson (1995-97-99-2002-04-06; 9-12-4 overall record), Cink (2002-04-06; 3-5-4), Perry (2004; 0-2-0), Furyk (1997-99-2002-04-06; 6-12-2), Leonard (1997-99; 0-3-5) and Campbell (2004-06; 1-3-2). The other six are all Ryder Cup rookies.

European captain Nick Faldo, on the other hand, will take a veteran team to Valhalla, with his 12 members -- captains picks Paul Casey (2004-06; 3-1-2) and Ian Poulter (2004; 1-1-0), and automatic qualifiers Sergio Garcia (1999-2002-04-06; 14-4-2), Soren Hansen (debut), Padraig Harrington (1999-2002-04-06; 7-8-2), Miguel Angel Jimenez (1999-04; 1-3-0), Robert Karlsson (2006; 0-1-2), Graeme McDowell (debut), Justin Rose (debut), Henrik Stenson (2006; 1-1-1), Lee Westwood (1997-99-2002-04-06; 14-8-3) and Oliver Wilson (debut) -- boasting a combined 19 Ryder Cup appearances and 41-27-12 record.

The Europeans have dominated the Ryder Cup in recent contests, winning four of the last five and seven of the last 10 with one tie. The last two have come by record margins, with the Europeans posting back-to-back 18 1/2-9 1/2 wins.

The announcement was made at the Radisson Martinique in New York City, where The PGA of America was founded on Jan. 17, 1916, by a group of New York professionals and several prominent amateur players. As part of the festivities, The PGA of America unveiled a historic plaque outside the hotel, which is located at W. 32nd St. and Broadway.
