Folds of Honor Foundation announces its 2008 scholarship recipients

- PGA.com

TULSA, Okla. -- The Folds of Honor Foundation has announced the remainder of the approximately 200 recipients of its 2008 Folds of Honor Scholarship awards, which include 180 spouses of military members wounded or killed in the line of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. The scholarships range from $500 to $10,000 which helped the recipients reach their goals of securing a better future for themselves and their children.

"These families have had their life's plans upended by injuries sustained fighting for their country which has now left them fighting for their families' survival," said Major Dan Rooney, Iraq War Veteran, F-16 fighter pilot, PGA Professional and founder of Patriot Golf Day, recently held over Labor Day Weekend, Aug. 29-Sept. 1. "We are honored by their sacrifice and thank The PGA for their invaluable support in helping make these families' dreams a reality."

Five spouses of military heroes severely wounded in battle have received the maximum scholarship amount of $10,000 including:

Lisa Bugg (Greenbelt, Md.) is the spouse of medically-retired Army Corporal (E4), Aaron Bugg, who had his leg amputated as a result of a roadside bomb injury in Iraq in 2004. She is pursuing a master's degree in social work and international studies and was inspired to pursue her degree by her previous international work including teaching English in Tanzania.

"I really wanted to reach out to third world populations," she said.

Tia Brooking (Jacksonville, N.C.) is the spouse of a Marine Lance Corporal (E3) shot by a sniper in 2007 while manning an observation post in Iraq. The bullet pierced both bullet proof glass and his armored vest, stopping in his left lung and causing permanent nerve damage. She is transferring from a community college to the University of North Carolina.

"Since my husband was injured I have had to take fewer classes so that I could help him recover. His injury also made me take a look at myself and realize that I may have to be the one with the main career in our family, even though we planned otherwise. So, I now have aspirations of higher education so that I can make sure my family is taken care of no matter what happens."

Patriot Golf Day took place at some 4,000 golf courses nationwide. In 2007, Patriot Golf Day raised $1.1 million for scholarships, and the Folds of Honor Foundation seeks to exceed that number this year.

Patriot Golf Day was created in partnership with The PGA of America and is jointly supported and conducted in coordination with The PGA and its network of more than 28,000 men and women professionals. Facilities who took part can be viewed at http://www.patriotgolfday.com.

During the weekend's event, golfers playing at participating courses were asked to add a minimum of $1 to their greens fees to help raise money for the Folds of Honor Scholarship Fund, which provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of military service members disabled or killed in the line of duty. Last year, approximately 3,200 golf courses participated in the event.
