Borich leads the way after two rounds at Senior PGA Professional

By Bob Denney, The PGA of America- PGA.com

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Mike Borich of Midvale, Utah, a long-hitter who is accustomed to the wind, became the "rabbit" Saturday morning as the weekend chase officially began for the title in the 20th Senior PGA Professional National Championship presented by Callaway Golf.

Borich, a 51-year-old PGA teaching professional at Meadowbrook Golf Club in Salt Lake City, had posted a 4-under-par 68 Friday afternoon at Toscana Country Club in Indian Wells, while most of his challengers were struggling to finish at nearby Andalusia Country Club, where heavy wind forced a suspension of play.

Once the restart for 66 players at Andalusia was complete Saturday morning, Borich's 36-hole total of 6-under-par 138 was good for a one-stroke advantage over two-time champion Mike San Filippo of Hobe Sound, Fla., who turned in a 72 Saturday morning at Andalusia.

J.R. Roth of Flushing, Mich., the 1993 PGA Professional National Champion, led a five-player group at 140, which included Kirk Hanefeld of Acton, Mass., Scott Spence of Middletown, R.I., Robert Thompson of Huntsville, Texas, and John Aubrey of Butler, Pa.

Borich had anticipated heavy wind Friday, and was delighted to discover he could take advantage of his opening eight holes with no wind on the Jack Nicklaus-designed Toscana course.

"I played the first eight holes with no wind and got it to 3 under par," said Borich, making his second appearance in the Championship. "I was able to keep hitting it long and putting it good and the wind is pretty conducive to my game. I hit a few irons off the tee because of my length and that gave me an advantage out there."

San Filippo captured the 2002 and 2005 Senior PGA Professional National Championships, and owns a glossy 70.5 career scoring average in five previous appearances. He has finished no lower than 12th in those previous championships.

"The winds just blew us over yesterday, but I was able to come back and keep it at even par," said San Filippo. "It was a pleasure to play both courses. Andalusia is a really nice facility. I just could not make many putts. I feel that the round got away from me, but I still have a good chance."

Defending Champion Bill Loeffler of Castle Rock, Colo., was part of a group at 141 that included first-round leader Roy Vucinich of Moon Township, Pa., who followed a stunning course record 64 at Andalusia on Thursday by ballooning to a 77 at Toscana, despite the fact that the course is built lower in the valley and cushioned by homes to offset direct wind gusts.

Vucinich's opening-round effort matched the first-round Championship record by Bob Ford of Oakmont, Pa., but that feat was overshadowed by his slumping to 6 over par on his back nine at Toscana.

"I struggled coming home today," said Vucinich, who recorded a pair of double bogeys down the stretch. "This course just didn't quite fit my eye like Andalusia did. It looks narrow from the tee but once you get out there, there actually is room."

Saturday's third round began at 12:30 p.m., with 76 players from a starting field of 264 making the final 36 holes after a cut at 2-over-par 146. The final two rounds will be contested at Toscana.

Roth, a 51-year-old PGA Life Member, was one of the fortunate players on Friday to finish before lunch, when the wind was nearly non-existent at Andalusia.

"I got off to a quick start Thursday at Toscana, with birdies on my first three holes and finished with six birdies and two bogeys," said Roth. "Today, I was not on the offensive from the start and made bad club selections on 16 and 17, each for bogeys."

Hanefeld, 52, offset a bogey at the par-4 sixth by collecting birdies at the third, 13th and 15th holes for a 70.

"I felt I made the highest score I could, despite hitting the ball well," said Hanefeld. "I left a lot of shots out there. Toscana is a little narrower off the tee than Andalusia. I played pretty well today, but unhappy the way I scored. I look forward to the weekend.

"I think it's great that we're playing out here and The PGA of America could not have picked better courses for this championship."

The winner of the Senior PGA Professional National Championship presented by Callaway Golf will have his name inscribed on the Leo F. Fraser Trophy and will receive a first-place check for $20,000 from a total purse of $285,000.

In addition, the low 35 finishers will qualify for the 2009 Senior PGA Championship at Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland, Ohio. The top eight finishers, including ties, will receive exemptions into the 2009 Senior PGA Professional National Championship presented by Callaway Golf. In addition, the top 5 finishers will be exempt into the Champions Tour National Finals at TPC Eagle Trace, provided they have filled out an entry by the entry deadline.
