
Legendary Bob Hope, winner of the 1989 PGA Distinguished Service Award and someone who shared his love of golf with millions through multiple entertainment genres, is the focus of a special exhibition -- "Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memory" -- which debuted Nov. 8, at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Fla.
Featuring the largest collection of Hope memorabilia ever placed on display in a single exhibition, "Shanks for the Memory" will remain at the World Golf Hall of Fame throughout 2009.
Among the more than 300 artifacts are Hope's PGA Distinguished Service Award and a PGA of America money clip that was presented to Hope in 1942. Hope carried the money clip for the remainder of his life.
"In 1942, I received one of my most treasured awards in golf," Hope wrote in Bob Hope: Confessions of a Hooker. "The PGA gave Bing [Crosby] and myself golf money clips for serving on the organization's advisory committee. I still have mine. It gets a lot of use when I peel off the bills to pay a Nassau bet."
Hope and Crosby's charity golf exhibitions inspired many other Hollywood stars to raise funds for U.S. troops, beginning in World War II. Overall, Hollywood raised nearly a million dollars for the USO; more than one million for the war bond drive and more than $2 million for Army and Navy relief societies.
