Much on the line as regular season ends at Wyndham Championship

- PGA.com

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Wyndham Championship, the last event of the PGA Tour Regular Season, is this week. A year ago, Brandt Snedeker won the tournament, which was also the final event of the 2007 Regular Season.

Snedeker came from five strokes off the pace in the final round. Jeff Overton, Shigeki Maruyama and Anders Hansen also benefited, beginning the week outside the top 144 FedExCup points leaders. With Overton tying for second, Maruyama tying for seventh and Hansen tying for 11th in Greensboro, the trio earned enough points to qualify for the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup.

The tournament moves from Forest Oaks Country Club, its home since 1977, and returns to Sedgefield Country Club, which has solely hosted 22 previous tournaments, while also being one of the sites -- along with Starmount Forest Country Club -- for five events, from 1938 to 1942.

Brandt Snedeker's final-round, 9-under 63 last year was the low finish in relation to par by a tournament winner on the PGA Tour in 2007, bettering Woody Austin's 8-under-par 62 at the Stanford St. Jude Championship. Snedeker's 9-under score was the best by a tournament winner since Kirk Triplett's 9-under 63 at the 2006 Chrysler Classic of Tucson.

Jeff Overton, the third-round leader in 2007, shot a final-round 70 and wound up tying for second. Despite missing on the opportunity to win his first PGA Tour title, Overton made a big leap in the FedExCup standings. Overton started the week No. 165 but jumped to No. 109 and gained one of the final playoff spots in the race for the FedExCup.

Greg Kraft fired a 6-under-par 66 and wound up in sixth place at 18-under par last year in Greensboro. Kraft's last top-10 finish on the PGA Tour had been a tie for sixth at the 2002 Touchstone Energy Tucson Open, a span of 69 events. Earlier this year, Kraft won the Puerto Rico Open for his first Tour victory.

Billy Mayfair was hot last year in Greensboro. He finished third in 2007, his fifth top-10 finish of the year and his third in his previous six starts, with six consecutive cuts made. It was Mayfair's best finish of the year until a solo third-place performance at the Fry's Electronics Open in the Fall Series. Mayfair also made a jump from No. 75 to No. 34 on the FedExCup points list.

Brandt Snedeker ended a streak of third-round leaders who had gone on to win the Wyndham Championship. He was the first player to come from behind on the final day since 1998 when Trevor Dodds rallied from three off the lead to beat Scott Verplank in a playoff.

Eric Axley and Kevin Stadler each had two eagles in the final round last year on par 5s: Nos. 2 and 13. They became the fourth and fifth players of the week to make two eagles in a round, joining Nathan Green, Tripp Isenhour and Will MacKenzie.

Brandt Snedeker's weekend score of 129 (66-63) matched the second-best final 36 holes on the 2007 PGA Tour. Tournament winner Aaron Baddeley posted a 128 total (64-64) at the FBR Open.

Sam Snead is still the standard in Greensboro. During his World Golf Hall of Fame career, Snead won eight times at the tournament now known as the Wyndham Championship. Snead won twice in playoffs and won the other six tournaments by a combined 28 strokes. Since Snead's last victory in 1965, there have been seven players who have won the tournament twice (Byron Nelson won in 1940-41 and 1945).

Prior to the British Open, Padraig Harrington was 40th on the FedExCup points list. After winning in England and again last week at the PGA Championship, Harrington finds himself in fourth place with one week left in the Regular Season. Harrington improved from 10th to his current place with his two-stroke win at the PGA Championship in Michigan. Tiger Woods remains the overall leader, followed by Kenny Perry and Phil Mickelson. Anthony Kim is in fifth. Sergio Garcia, who was the runner-up last week at Oakland Hills Country Club, improved eight places, to 12th, 553 points outside of the top 10.
