For the first time in his career, Camilo Villegas is the PGA Tour's Player of the Month. He won the award for September based on his two victories in his only two starts, with both victories coming in the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup.
Villegas opened his month with a victory in the BMW Championship, where he carded rounds of 65-66-66-68--265 to earn $1.26 million. A few weeks later, he captured the Tour Championship with rounds of 72-66-69-66--273 and another $1.26 million.
Villegas eventually finished second in the Playoffs. He is currently seventh on the 2009 money list with a total of $4,422,641.
CADDIE COMMENTARY: Steve Williams, best known as Tiger Woods' caddie, will make his debut as a TV commentator at the inaugural Kiwi Challenge, which will be played in his native New Zealand later this fall.
Williams will serve as an on-course commentator for the made-for-TV event, which features rising stars Anthony Kim, Hunter Mahan, Adam Scott and Brandt Snedeker in a 36-hole, stroke-play event that offers one of the largest winner's checks in golf -- $1.5 million -- out of the $2.6 million purse.
The event will air Nov. 15-16 on NBC.
"This is my first experience at this," Williams said. "I'm doing this because the Kiwi Challenge will bring great exposure for New Zealand and give New Zealanders the opportunity to see four of the world's best players in one group. Seldom would we have four players of this quality at a tournament."
Joining Williams in the broadcast crew will be Dan Hicks, Roger Maltbie and Mark Rolfing.
SIX-WEEK LAYOFF FOR SINGH: World No. 3 Vijay Singh has been ruled out of action for at least six weeks. The 45-year-old Fijian has been advised to rest his injured left forearm, which has troubled him for the past few months.
Tendinitis will cause Singh to miss an event in Malaysia late October and the big HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai in early November.
The remainder of his 2008 schedule will be subject to his recovery from the injury. But, he said, he plans to play in the Chevron World Challenge hosted by Tiger Woods in California in late December, as well as the Father-Son Challenge with his son Qass in early December.
"I have been dealing with tendinitis in my forearm for a good part of the 2008 season and my doctors instructed me to rest it to try and reduce the impact of the injury for the 2009 season," he said. "As disappointing as it will be to miss these events, it is important that I follow my doctors' direction and do what is best for my long-term health."
