Feb. 2,. 2009 -- The 2009 PGA Tour FBR open is now in the history books. Congratulations to PGA Tour veteran Kenny Perry. At age 49, now with his 13th Tour victory, Perry is still going strong towards his goal of 20 Tour wins. However, "lucky 13" as it turned out was a bit tougher than the others as it took a three-hole playoff to get the job done.
By no means a stranger to the winners circle, Perry has compiled a very impressive record over the past year. In addition to last years' victories at the 2008 Memorial, Buick Open and John Deere Classic, Perry was also a valuable member of the 2008 Ryder Cup Team in his home state of Kentucky.

The focal turning point of this year's FBR Open for Perry was most likely the 35-foot putt on the 18th hole of the third round. Draining it was a huge emotional boost for Perry going into the final round. That same PING putter also took him home from the fringe on the 3rd play off hole, of course sealing the victory.
The key for success of this week is FOCUS.
A new addition to TPC Scottsdale this year which goes to the subject of focus, are the changes to the 16th hole. For the first time in the history of the PGA Tour, a par 3 hole has been completely enclosed with enough seating and corporate boxes for the 20,000 fans that now gather at the 16th hole at TPC of Scottsdale.
That is a whole new meaning to stadium golf. The atmosphere when you walk through the tunnel from the 15th green to the 16th tee created by the fans as you enter the Coliseum, can -- and already has -- become a pivotal turning point in the tournament. The noise level will certainly test the focus of even the most seasoned veteran. The other new addition which will test the players nerves is the jumbo TV monitor right behind the green. Imagine looking up for your tee shot to see yourself and your stats right behind your target. Talk about a need to FOCUS.
There were several great examples this week of watching players overcome distractions and focus intently on the task at hand. A few examples that jump to mind are:
On Friday Anthony Kim hits a drive on the par 5 13th hole into an unplayable lie. After a drop into the rough, his third shot finds the cart path left of the green. As A player's option, Kim plays his shot from the path onto the green leaving him a 12 foot putt for par. Kim makes the putt showing true focus and patience.
Also on Friday Kevin Streelman plays his 2nd shot on 17th hole -- the drivable par 4 -- from just in front of the green. Streelman holes out his pitch shot for eagle which kept him in for the weekend. This is another example of true focus.
A lesson learned for the day is Focus. Golf is a game that is to be enjoyed. Next time you go out to play, think about the following.
The entire swing happens in less than 2 seconds. Therefore if you shoot 80, you are swinging the club for only about 3 minutes of the 4 hours you are playing. So take your time, enjoy and FOCUS with each shot.
