June 8, 2009 -- Stop me if you've heard this one before: Tiger Woods makes a tremendous charge, hits some heroic, miracle shots, and wins a big golf tournament in dramatic fashion. Yes, it's a song we've all heard 67 times now.
But here's a new verse: Tiger Woods hit 14 out of 14 fairways on Sunday -- every single one! He missed only five fairways all week! The Tiger Woods who sometimes struggled with accuracy off the tee was the best player in the world -- how good is the one who finds the short grass 90% of the time?
I couldn't help but smirk a little at all the people who had dissected and over-analyzed Tiger's swing over the past few weeks and months. This idea that he had to somehow start over or completely overhaul is swing was absurd. It's not like he was shooting 80 or missing cuts. It was mostly just a little timing, something we knew he could and would get back. His mechanics were still superb. It was just a matter of getting that clubface square at impact. And we now see what happens when that timing gets back into his game.
That is what stood out to me this past week as I watched The Memorial Tournament. Tiger's Sunday charge was amazing. But people are going to look back on the chip in on no. 11 and the approach shot on no. 18 as the shots that won the tournament for Tiger. Of course they were a huge part, but let's not lose sight that there were 72 holes to this tournament. Other players had eagles, other players hit great approach shots. Tiger's win was based on his solid play for the entire week -- especially the weekend.
So what does this mean for you? Even the great Tiger Woods knows that the game is easier from the fairway. His win this week proves it. And you need to keep that in mind when you tee it up as well. Follow Tiger's lead. Here's three ways he did it at Muirfield Village this week.
1.) Choke down on the driver -- Just a half inch down on the driver will mean a little shorter backswing and better control of the clubhead.
2.) Concentrate on balance -- As I stated earlier, Tiger has superb fundamentals and mechanics. This is even more impressive when you consider that he's a pretty hard swinger. But the one thing you hardly ever see him do is take a swing without being in complete balance -- set-up through to the finish.
3.) Hit a shorter club -- It's better to be 150 yards from the green and in the fairway then 80 yards away and in the trees or a deep bunker. Did you notice how often Tiger hit a three or five-wood off the tee this week? That incredible approach shot he hit on the 18th green on Sunday that won him the tournament? He hit a long iron off the tee to set that up. I think that's how Jack Nicklaus wanted that hole to be played, and Tiger followed that to perfection.
So another week, another win for Tiger. But this may be a new Tiger, or at least, a newer Tiger. I know the highlights will show that approach shot on the 72nd hole over and over and talk about how that won the tournament. But how many people have the discipline to hit an iron off that tee instead of a driver? Exactly. So the world's best ball striker may also be the world's smartest player. Wow, good luck at the U.S. Open rest of the field. But for the rest of us, enjoy watching Tiger when he plays like this. It's fun, it's historic and it's also good for your game.
