Local Knowledge: 2009 FBR Open at TPC Scottsdale

By John Kim, Coordinating Producer- PGA.com

Jan. 27, 2009 -- Take whatever image you have of watching golf, on television or live in person, and throw it out the window this week. This is the week of The FBR Open; the largest, the loudest and the craziest event on the PGA Tour. There may only be one course that could handle such a raucous event and PGA Head Professional Greg Wolf of TPC Scottsdale is ready to welcome the world.

PGA.com: Many golf fans think of quiet, classical piano type accompaniment when they visualize golf. It's a serene game. But you guys, at this tournament, it's rock and roll!

Wolf: It definitely has a more rock and roll feel to it here. It's a different energy at The FBR Open than it is at most tournaments, that's for sure. Now let's set the record clear, the tournament is run in the best manner, the fans are appreciative and everything operates with a great deal of respect and integrity of the game. It is loud and enthusiastic, but it's a truly enjoyable and respectful environment. Then you get to hole no. 16, and it's a little bit more of a raucous time. The fans get loud, they sing, they cheer and boo -- but again, at the appropriate times.

PGA.com: Of all the hilarity and energy that takes place at the 16th hole, what is your favorite story and/or memory?

Wolf: To be honest, during the tournament, I try to stay away from the 16th hole. I love to watch, but I have too many things to do to get too caught up in being a spectator, and if you go out there, you don't want to leave. But it takes quite a few weeks to get the grandstands up around the 16th hole so there is often a crowd of workers around when regular play from our guests come through. And you'd better believe, they act as their own gallery -- cheering good shots and booing shots that miss the green.

PGA.com: Do you ever go out and play the hole?

Wolf: I was out just a couple of weeks ago playing. And I missed the green -- so yes, I got booed pretty good.

PGA.com: How is golf at TPC Scottsdale the other 51 weeks of the year?

Wolf: It's good. We are very proud of our course, the facility and the experience we offer to our guests. You know, despite the economic climate, we actually grew our rounds last year. This is a course that people want to play. That's one of the greatest things about golf. You can't just grab a group of friends and play ball at Wrigley Field. You can't just go shoot hoops at Madison Square Garden. But you can watch the best players in the world play this week at TPC Scottsdale and then book a trip to come play the exact same course. That's really awesome. That's a great memory for golf fans, for sports fans in general.

PGA.com: You are not only known for the most exuberant crowds, you're known for the largest crowds in golf. Do you expect the same this week?

Wolf: We do. Absolutely. I can't say they will be as big as last year, but only because last year was a record. I think we had around 539,000 people for the week. We had 179,000 on Saturday alone.! The course is set up in a way that is so accommodating for large galleries, where you can spread out and still have a great view of the action, despite the large number of people. And it's fun, it's a great escape for people who have so many stressful things on their minds nowadays. Watching great golf on a great course is a nice respite.

PGA.com: Another great thing to note, the fans love this atmosphere for obvious reasons, but the players do too!

Wolf: For one week, they really do. I don't know if they'd love this atmosphere multiple times a year, but they really do love this one. They sure get excited about the 16th hole. They play to the crowds, throw them gifts, you name it. You look at our field and you realize how special this event is. This same week, the Dubai Desert Classic is taking many of the top players in the world, but we still get so many great players choosing to play here. That really says it all.

PGA.com: You have one other competition this week for viewers and a local audience, don't you?

Wolf: They have this football game going on Sunday where our local team is playing, I think they call it the Super Bowl. But we are excited as a community and ready as a tournament. We expect our final putt to drop around 3:15 or so local time and then we'll switch the big screen monitor to the ballgame. For fans who want to stick around the course and watch, we'll be prepared to throw a great viewing party. Remember, we hosted the Super Bowl last year and had record crowds. We will be ready.

PGA.com: Is it still 'The Greatest Show on Grass?"

Wolf: No doubt. There's nothing else like this in the world.
