Local Knowledge: Harbour Town and the Verizon Heritage

By Justin Nicholson- PGA.com

April 15, 2009 -- Aren't players supposed to take time off after such intense weeks such as the Masters? In theory, yes. But the field is always full of stars at the Verizon Heritage at Harbour Town. There might not be another venue on Tour that could draw so many of the game's best after Augusta. So how do they do it? PGA Head Professional John Farrell gives us an idea.

PGA.com: What is it about Harbour Town and the Verizon Heritage that brings so many of the top players in the world to Hilton Head despite having just competed in the Masters the week before?

Farrell: I think players really love the atmosphere and the golf course here at Harbour Town. There's something really special about the entire resort. It is a great family style setting, and honestly I think some of the players' wives insist that they play here! Just today, I saw four families walking around, holding hands, and I know that they're here because there's something for everyone. Fishing, biking, crabbing, tennis, it really doesn't matter what you're into because you can find it in the area. It's hard to beat that.

PGA.com: One thing is for sure, Boo Weekley knows how to handle Harbour Town. What is it about his game that makes him such a "horse for the course?"

Farrell: The funny thing is that there were several Tour officials who predicted he would win. He is such a phenomenal ball striker and the design is a ball striker's dream. You have to shape shots to win here, and with the small size of the greens, you have to hit a lot of good wedges and chip shots. Considering Weekley's ball striking is renowned on Tour as one of the best, it really didn't surprise anyone that he defended his title successfully last year, let alone won it the first time.

PGA.com: What are some of the holes that provide the greatest challenge for the players, and why?

Farrell: It's hard to say without knowing exactly how the wind is going to behave. When the gusts get strong, the par 3's tend to become really tough, and can wreak havoc on a player's round. Also, there are some great short par 4's that seem easy at first glance, but end up being just the opposite. That's the real genius of Pete Dye's design. There are so few courses nowadays with tough, short par 4's. You keep seeing more 480 or 490 yard holes, but we have a few under 400 yards that provide a really good challenge because of the shape and the placement of trees.

PGA.com: Last I checked, Harbour Town is less than 7000 yards in length. How does the course make up for its relatively short layout, even as a par 71? Do you feel that the length will make it easier for the players to post lower numbers?

Farrell: I definitely don't think the distance makes it any easier on these guys. The really unique thing about this course is how much the trees are involved. There are tons of spots on fairways that still leave little room to hit the green, and unless players are in the right places, they will have a lot of trouble making birdies. You will see a lot of guys have to shape their shots just to get anywhere close to the flag. When all is said and done, the final scores here usually end up looking like they did at Augusta. You won't see players going really low maybe around 10 under par.

PGA.com: You work at one of the premier golf facilities in the country, in one of the most popular golf areas anywhere...is there anything not to like?

Farrell: Honestly, I can't think of one. I couldn't even make one up if you asked me to. I've never had a day where I've dreaded going to work. This is really a wonderful place with great owners and a great community. It's not just fantastic one week a year, either, it's all 52 weeks. It's an honor to be here, and I've enjoyed every minute of it.
