June 3, 2009 -- Few tournaments can boast of the mystique, the magnitude and the magic of The Memorial. But then again, few can say they are hosted by one of the most iconic figures in golf history. But this grand stage doesn't just appear by chance. PGA Head Professional Larry Dornisch tells us that there is a great effort put forth in order to achieve such impressive returns.
PGA.com: First off, it's clear when you step on the grounds of Muirfield Village that it's a little different than other PGA Tour venues. It just looks and feels special. Everything about it is first class. I guess when you have a great course that's attached to none other than Jack Nicklaus, you're bound to have a tremendous field year after year. Aside from the course and the Golden Bear's involvement, what keeps the top players coming back?

Dornisch: I think it all starts with Jack, you just can't take him out of the equation. Jack spent so many years traveling on the Tour with his family and developed a sense of how players should be treated.
Here we always have stuff for the kids to do, we make appointments at spas for the wives if they want it, we have good parking and food for the caddies and, as with anything else, it evolves over the years. We've always given the players courtesy cars for the week. This year, each player will get a Lexus.
We get them free passes to the Columbus Zoo to take the kids out. If they want to go to a restaurant, we make them reservations and get them in and out. We take care of them, treat them like guests and get them everything they want. On top of all that, we give them one of the best conditioned golf courses in the world -- it's tremendous -- and we run the best event we possibly can.
PGA.com: When it comes time for the Memorial, there's always a lot of talk about the furrowed bunkers, basically thick columns of sand that are left behind from a rake with wider teeth. It makes the ball far more difficult to control. Will you have the furrowed bunkers again this year?
Dornisch: That's actually one of a couple of changes we've made this year. So the short answer is, no, we won't have the furrowed bunkers. We'll cut the rough down to three inches the Sunday night before the tournament and let it grow throughout the week. We'll also maintain the quickest greens possible. With the furrowed bunkers and lightning greens, it gets too difficult.
PGA.com: Let's get back to Mr. Nicklaus for a minute. There's a legend who has never forgotten where he came from. How much does he mean to the community in and around Dublin, Ohio?
Dornisch: He's a very generous man. In fact, he flew in early to be at the NCAA Golf Championship in Toledo to present the trophy. He's very giving and not someone who runs around telling everyone what he's done. The whole family realizes what their obligation is to golf and they give back in ways that are never publicized.
PGA.com: Knowing Muirfield Village the way you do, which one spot on the course would you recommend a first-time visitor to be sure not to miss?
Dornisch: The most popular place, we used to say, is, "under the willow by No. 14," but the willow isn't there anymore. A lot of people congregate there, as well as No. 12, or behind 18 green.
PGA.com: Is there any one thing that goes on behind the scenes gearing up for the Memorial that you think people would be surprised to know about?
Dornisch: I just think people don't understand the scope of what goes on. It's everything from roping and staking the course, to tournament officials marking the course, or the detail we put in to make sure there are six brands of range balls available, so that the players can hit whatever brand they play. I don't think people realize everything that goes into preparing for the tournament
