Sharp drop in sales of Titleist balls forces layoff of 169 workers

- AP

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (AP) -- The economy appears to be keeping more people off the links and that's causing problems for a Massachusetts company that makes golf balls.

Acushnet Co. plans to lay off 169 workers due to a sharp drop in worldwide sales of Titleist golf balls.

A spokeswoman for the Fairhaven-based company told The Standard-Times of New Bedford that employees were given the news during their Wednesday shifts. The cuts will affect plants in New Bedford and Dartmouth and custom operations in New Bedford and Fairhaven.

The layoffs hit about 11 percent of the company's Massachusetts work force and come on the heels of a 12 percent reduction in January.

Titleist Golf Balls President Jerry Bellis says the market has fallen more sharply in 2009 than the company originally forecast.
