Walker Cup hopeful Enoch of Wales dies in car crash at age 19

- AP

LONDON (AP) -- Ben Enoch, one of Wales' most promising golfers, was killed in a car crash Thursday while driving to a tournament. He was 19.

The amateur golfer was traveling to a tournament in England when his car crashed into a trailer, the chief executive of the Golf Union of Wales said Friday. He was a member of the preliminary 28-member Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup squad that will face the United States in September.

Enoch was to attend East Tennessee University on a golf scholarship this fall. His older brother Rhys is a golfer at the school.

Last summer, Ben Enoch was part of the Great Britain and Ireland boys team that beat the Continent of Europe. He was hoping to be among the 10 players picked for the Walker Cup team, which will be announced in August.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this terribly sad time," said Richard Dixon, the chief executive of the Golf Union of Wales. "Ben was one of the most promising golfers in Wales, a bright and vibrant personality in our teams."

Enoch was runner-up in the 2008 Welsh Amateur Championship.

"He not only was an internationally ranked golfer with an unlimited future in the game, he was an outstanding young man and student," East Tennessee golf coach Fred Warren said on the team's Web site.

The Walker Cup competition of amateurs pits Great Britain and Ireland against the United States every two years. It's named for the great-grandfather of former President George W. Bush.

The event will be played at the Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania on Sept. 12-13.
