In these times of economic uncertainty, it is more important than ever for those who can lend a helping hand to do so. That spirit prevails at the Nationwide Tour's Athens Regional Foundation Classic in Athens, Ga., which has established itself as an effective and enjoyable fundraiser as well as a showcase of some of the game's elite golfers.

As the home of the University of Georgia, Athens is rightly associated with college football, but its enthusiasm for golf is impressive in its own right. Officially, 300 volunteers will show up before sunrise every day this week to collect tickets, keep score, serve food and do all the essential tasks that often go unnoticed.
The community has lined up to support this tournament, not just because of its love of golf but as a way to contribute to Athens Regional Foundation, the event's sponsor and beneficiary. And in a climate in which every dollar spent is scrutinized and analyzed, the foundation's sponsorship is proving to be a wise investment.
"This tournament brings great awareness to causes supported by the Athens Regional Hospital," said Helene Schwartz, director of the Athens Regional Foundation.
With facilities that include the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support, a free service provided to those diagnosed with cancer, and the forthcoming Griffin-DuBose Healing Lodge, which will provide even more support services, it is a near certainty that everyone in the community will eventually use one of these services or knows someone who will. And the event's results include more than the dollars that are raised.

Jean Allen, a breast cancer survivor who has worked closely with Athens Regional for 14 years as a volunteer, is one such return on investment. Her bout with cancer led her to realize that there was a dire need for more funding and awareness for the medical care of the women in her community, and the tournament presented her with an ideal way to become involved and help raise funds and exposure.
Allen became involved with the tournament "because I am committed to support all that the Athens Regional Foundation does," she said, "and I believe that the Nationwide Tour is good for the hospital and the community." She and her husband have served as volunteers at the tournament for four years running.
Many people enjoy golf tournaments, but golf can also be a vehicle for awareness, philanthropy and change in a community. The Athens Regional Foundation Classic is a shining example. If you're able to attend this week's event, you'll witness some great golf and also support a great cause.
