PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Colorado team of Michael Zaremba and Micah Rudosky fired their second straight 9-under-par 63 to win the 51st annual TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Senior-Junior Championship, Jan. 22 at the PGA Golf Club.
At 29-under-par 259 in the four-ball stroke play (best-ball) format, Zaremba and Rudosky finished one stroke ahead of Dan Fabian of West Palm Beach, Fla., and John Guyton of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., who tied for second at 260 with Gary Trivisonno, Aurora, Ohio, and Dwayne Randall, Findlay Lake, N.Y.
Fabian, Guyton and Randall all had putts for birdies at the par-4 18th hole on the Ryder Course, which could have forced a playoff, but all missed. Trivisonno's third shot from behind the green rolled past the hole.
The Zaremba-Rudosky and Fabian-Guyton teams had started the final round two strokes behind Trivisonno and Randall, who were no worse than tied for the lead after the first three rounds before closing with 66, two strokes higher than the 64 by Fabian and Guyton.
"We didn't think it would be enough after we parred the last four holes," said Zaremba, the PGA head professional at Desert Hawk at Pueblo in suburban Pueblo, Colo. "We were very disappointed when we walked off the last green.
"But I hit it solid all week though I lost my feel for my putting the day it was so windy."
In 72 holes, Mike had three eagles and I had one," added Rudosky, 38, the PGA head professional at the Conquistador Country Club in Cortez. "That was good stuff."
The duo opened Monday with 65 on the Ryder Course.
It was their second Senior-Junior title, following a victory in the PGA Western Winter Tournament Program in March 2006, in California. This week, the twosome earned $4,000 apiece from the $94,670 purse.
Zaremba was the overall winner a week ago at the PGA Golf Club for age groups 50-54 and 55-59 in the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship.
Tony Kelley of Holyoke, Mass., and John Paesani of Norwich, Conn., the first round co-leaders, closed with 70-269, to tie for 26th.
