Defending champions prepare for another elite field at Junior PGA

- PGA.com

They both know what it takes to win a Junior PGA Championship, and now they both want to try and do it again.

Danielle Frasier of Encinitas, Calif., and Anthony Paolucci of Dallas, Texas, are looking for a repeat performance in 2009, at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio, site of last year's exciting Championship.

Paolucci, who is competing in his fourth Junior PGA Championship, considered the victory among the best of his career.

"It was the highlight of my summer, for sure," says Paolucci, who finished in a tie for 7th place in 2007. "My main goal coming into the Championship was to make the Junior Ryder Cup team and by winning and being exempt that made it happen."

The Texas native is eager to play in the 2009 edition of the Championship, but knows defending his title will not be easy.

"Last year's field was really good but in talking to other players, we think this year's field will be even stronger," said Paolucci. "You have to go low in this Championship or you will not even get a top-5 finish."

Frasier, who won the Junior PGA Championship on her first attempt, is also eager to defend her title in Ohio.

"You want to play against the best, and being the defending champion, people are out to get you," says Frasier, who also won the 2008 Emerson Junior Golf Classic, just weeks before the Championship. "There is definitely more pressure now that I have won and I have to come out and play solid."

She acknowledged that putting well would be essential to earning another title in the 34th edition of the Championship.

"I didn't hit the ball great last year, especially off the tee," said Frasier. "But my putting was lights out and that really gave me a huge advantage."

The 72-hole competition will be staged for the second consecutive year at TPC River's Bend. The tournament will feature a 54-hole cut to the low 30 boys and 30 girls, including ties, following the third round of play on July 30.

"We are excited to bring the Junior PGA Championship back to TPC River's Bend, which proved to be a stern test for the competitors in 2008," says PGA of America President Jim Remy. "The Championship will present another premier field that will showcase the very best in junior golf."

This year's field will consist of past winners of the Championship, PGA Section winners, many of Polo Golf and Golfweek's top-ranked players, and selected national junior tournament winners.

The boys' division features many of the top junior golfers in the country, including the top ranked player by Golfweek, Jordan Spieth, of Dallas, Texas.

Spieth, who lost to fellow Dallas native Paolucci in a playoff in 2008, won the 2009 FootJoy Boys Invitational in June, and was a member of the victorious 2008 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team.

Joining the Texas duo will be stalwarts Patrick Winther of Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., T.J. Vogel of Cooper City, Fla., and Emiliano Grillo of Bradenton, Fla., ranked fourth, eighth and 18th, respectively by the Polo Golf rankings. Vogel finished in seventh place at the 2008 Junior PGA Championship.

Joining the Californian Frasier in the Girls' Division will be arguably the strongest field in the history of the Championship. Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., the top-ranked player in both the Golfweek and Polo Golf rankings, won the Junior PGA Championship as a 12-year-old in 2007, becoming the youngest Champion in the history of the Championship, and finished in third in 2008.

Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawaii, who placed second in the 2007 Championship and is ranked seventh by Golfweek, and Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury, Mass, the 2006 Junior PGA Champion, are both playing in their final Championship.

The Girls' Division also includes Jennifer Johnson of La Quinta, Calif., a member of the 2008 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team and who is ranked sixth in the Polo Golf rankings.

Others top ranked players scheduled to compete are Victoria Tanco of Bradenton, Fla., and Jenny Shin of Torrance, Calif., ranked second and third, respectively, by both Golfweek and the Polo Golf rankings.

Both the boys and girls will be competing for a spot on the 2010 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team, as the Champion for each division will be exempt to the event, being staged at the Gleneagles Hotel and Resort in Perthshire, Scotland, Sept. 27-28, 2010, provided they are a member of the 2011 or later graduating class.

Golf Channel will present a one-hour highlight show of the Junior PGA Championship, with the first airing on Thurs., Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

David Toms celebrates 25th anniversary

The PGA of America recognizes the 25th anniversary of David Toms winning the 1984 Junior PGA Championship, played at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Toms became the first Junior PGA Champion to also win a major championship, when he captured the 2001 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth, Ga.

"All the kids looked forward to the Junior PGA and to be able to win a 'major' was a big deal for me. I feel very fortunate to have won such a prestigious tournament against a stellar field of junior golfers. It was a great start to my career and I have great memories from the event."

Other Junior PGA Champions who have also won major championships include Cristie Kerr of Scottsdale, Ariz., winner of the 1995 Junior PGA Championship and the 2007 U.S. Women's Open; Grace Park of Scottsdale, winner of the 1996 Junior PGA Championship and the 2004 Kraft Nabisco Championship; In-Bee Park of Henderson, Nev., winner of the 2001 and '02 Junior PGA Championship and the 2008 U.S. Women's Open; and Trever Immelman, who claimed the 1996 Junior PGA Championship title and the 2008 Masters.
