Editor's Note: Next month at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., award-winning author Dan Jenkins will cover his 201st major championship. Jenkins' recent book, "Jenkins at the Majors" brings to life 94 of his most memorable major championship stories. PGA NEWS recently asked Jenkins to rank his Top 5 PGA Championships.
1927: Cedar Crest Country Club, Dallas, Texas
Wish I'd been there. At Cedar Crest in Dallas on Nov. 5, to see Walter Hagen win his fourth PGA in row (and fifth overall) with a 1-up victory over Joe Turnesa in the finals. But Grantland Rice wasn't there, either. I checked. That weekend he was covering unbeaten Notre Dame against unbeaten Minnesota in South Bend.
1945: Moraine Country Club, Dayton, Ohio
Byron Nelson winning at Moraine in Dayton for his ninth win of his remarkable 11 victories in a row. In order, Byron beat Gene Sarazen, Mike Turnesa (in a thriller), Denny Shute, Claude Harmon, and Sam Byrd.
1965: Laurel Valley Country Club, Ligonier, Pa.
My buddy, Dave Marr, holding off Nicklaus and Casper at Laurel Valley. And remembering the note his cousin, Jackie Burke Jr., left in his locker to be read Sunday morning before the final round: "Fairways and greens, Cuz."
1974: Tanglewood Golf Club, Winston-Salem, N.C.
Trevino edging Nicklaus (yet again in a major) at Tanglewood, and rejoicing over 62-year old Sam Snead finishing in a tie for third. Amazing.
1999: Medinah (Ill.) Country Club
Tiger nipping Sergio at Medinah. A pivotal major for both guys, career-wise. Defining moments: Sergio's "tree trunk" shot, and Tiger's gutsy putt on 17.
