Two-time major champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina heads the elite foursome in the 27th PGA Grand Slam of Golf, which will be conducted Oct. 20-21, at Bermuda's Port Royal Golf Course, situated on the island's western shore.
Though the venue has changed for the season-ending classic, Cabrera has had much experience on the island paradise. He won a 2007 PGA Grand Slam of Golf some 45 minutes away at Mid Ocean Club in a playoff with Ireland's Padraig Harrington.
Cabrera, the reigning Masters Champion, will be joined by a trio making their PGA Grand Slam debuts -- PGA Champion Y.E. Yang of South Korea, U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover and British Open Champion Stewart Cink.
In the past two years on the island, PGA Grand Slam of Golf contestants have averaged a combined 69.1 strokes, and there have been two consecutive playoffs to determine the "Champion of Champions."
This month, golf's elite foursome faces a new challenge at par-70 Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton Parish. Course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. deemed Port Royal his finest work outside the United States. Port Royal, a public layout that extends to 6,824 yards, underwent a $13.7 million renovation that began in January 2008 and reopened this past July.
The course, with trees removed that were not native to the site, now becomes a major challenge as the holes are more exposed to the swirling island gusts.
Port Royal's scenic par-3 16th is a "cliff hanger" which overlooks Whale Bay. The course's undisputed signature hole, will play to 235 yards.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf will once again air on TNT, where it is broadcast in prime-time to more than 89 million U.S. homes and an international audience of more than 100 countries. The PGA Grand Slam of Golf will air Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. ET, and Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. ET.
Begun in 1979 and expanded to 36 holes in 1991, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf provides the best players in the world the opportunity to earn a spot in the most elusive and difficult foursome in golf.
Champions include: Cabrera, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Tom Lehman, Ben Crenshaw, Greg Norman, Nick Price and Ian Woosnam.
