PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Under pristine conditions on Tuesday at PGA Golf Club, 2007 PGA Jones Cup Champion Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., shot an opening-round total of 5-under-par 283 to grab the lead in the eighth annual PGA Jones Cup.

The Camels were led by Andrew Kegarise of Mint Hill, N.C., who fired a blistering opening-round 4-under-par 68 to post the low 18-hole total.

"I really gained confidence throughout the round and really putted well all day," said Kegarise. "I rolled the putts in when I had to and made up from some mistakes early in the round."

Kegarise and his teammates came into the Championship with one goal in mind, to win the PGA Jones Cup.

"We want to win. We think we have the best team coming from Campbell in quite a while," said Kegarise. "We really wanted to jump out early and we did."

PGA Golf Management Director Ken Jones of Lillington, N.C., who has been the director since 1998, was excited about the performance of his team.

"I was expecting my team to play very well and they showed it today," said Jones. "I have been to five of these events and this is the best team we have brought."

Jones will make sure his team is prepared for the final round tomorrow and knows it will not be an easy task.

"I will let them know that golf is one shot at a time. You pick a target and go and forget your mistakes," said Jones. "You have to play all 18 holes and no acceptance speeches will be written tonight that is for sure."

Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C., was second overall, eight-strokes behind Campbell University. They were followed by Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla., who is in third place overall.

The 36-hole event, featuring all 20 schools in the PGA Golf Management University program, was played on the award-winning Wanamaker Course, which played 7,025 yards.

The University of Idaho, the defending champion, fired an opening-round 299, and sit 16-strokes behind the Camels.

The 100-player field brought together teams from 16 states, who are competing at The PGA Golf Club for the second consecutive year.

Begun by Mississippi State University (MSU) in 2002, the PGA Jones Cup is named after the late Dr. S. Roland Jones, MSU's first PGA Golf Management director. The event serves to provide a platform where participants can display professionalism, integrity, character and camaraderie; all characteristics Dr. Jones instilled in PGA Golf Management students.

All participating universities are schools accredited by The PGA of America to offer the four-and-one-half year PGA Golf Management Program. The college curriculum includes extensive classroom studies, an internship experience and player development, and provides students the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for success in the golf industry as a PGA Professional. Students in the PGA Golf Management Program study a combination of golf and business-related subjects, as well as serve 16-20 months in an on-course internship within the golf industry.
