PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Fighting Camels of Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., captured their second PGA Jones Cup title, firing a final-round total of 9-over-par 297 for a 580 total, and cruising to victory by 15-strokes at the eighth annual PGA Jones Cup.
Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla., and Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C., tied for second overall at 595.
The Camels were led by Spencer Huggins of Conover, N.C., who fired a solid final-round 71 to post the low 36-hole total.
"This is my first PGA Jones Cup, but we won in 2007 so we had some high expectations," said Huggins. "The team went out there and hit and tried to make all the big putts."
The 21-year-old aspiring PGA Professional was satisfied with his overall play.
"My mentality this week was to get it on the green and go from there," said Huggins. "I struggled through the first 14 holes to make anything. I finally made one at 15 and also birdied 16 and 17, so it felt good."
Huggins was also pleased with how the entire team performed, as they reached their overall goal of claiming a PGA Jones Cup title.
"I think it says a lot about our program and the opportunities we have had at Campbell," said Huggins. "It shows the instruction we received at Campbell as far as player development classes and instruction development classes has really paid off."
First-round leader Andrew Kegarise of Mint Hill, N.C., shot a final-round 75 for Campbell, who captured their second title, and first since 2007.
PGA Golf Management Director Ken Jones of Lillington, N.C., who has been the director at Campbell University since 1998, was proud of the way his team played.
"They are all solid players and knew how to finish this Championship off," said Jones. "This title is something that each of these guys is going to take with him into the future and claim they were part of this PGA Jones Cup team."
Jones is also excited about the future of his PGA Golf Management program and the exposure that his team received by winning this title.
"We have a lot of people trying to qualify for this event in the program and this will make it even more intense next year," said Jones. "The players will be able to go back to Campbell and tell about the experience they had here. It will pay huge dividends in the future."
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs finished in fourth place.
The University of Idaho, the defending champion, finished in 12th place overall. The Vandals were led by Ben Weyland of Bellingham, Wash., who fired his second consecutive 73.
The 36-hole event, featuring all 20 schools in the PGA Golf Management University program, was played on the award-winning Wanamaker Course, which played to 7,025 yards.
The 100-player field brought together teams from 16 states, who were competing for the Dr. Roland S. Jones Trophy at The PGA Golf Club for the second consecutive year.
Begun by Mississippi State University (MSU) in 2002, the PGA Jones Cup is named after the late Dr. S. Roland Jones, MSU's first PGA Golf Management director. The event serves to provide a platform where participants can display professionalism, integrity, character and camaraderie; all characteristics Dr. Jones instilled in PGA Golf Management students.
All participating universities are schools accredited by The PGA of America to offer the four-and-one-half year PGA Golf Management Program. The college curriculum includes extensive classroom studies, an internship experience and player development, and provides students the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for success in the golf industry as a PGA Professional. Students in the PGA Golf Management Program study a combination of golf and business-related subjects, as well as serve 16-20 months in an on-course internship within the golf industry.
