Just how big is golf?

The leading organizations within the industry that comprise Golf 20/20 set out to answer that question and the results may surprise you.

In 2011, the last year for which complete data was available, golf generated $68.8 billion of goods and services in the U.S. When you look at the total indirect and induced impact the game had on the economy it came to $176.8 billion supporting 1.98 million jobs with total wage income of $55.6 billion.

 In keeping with its trend of adding new events in overseas markets, LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan announced on Monday that the newest women’s professional event will be held on Paradise Island, Bahamas. 

The newly minted and as yet unnamed event will be sponsored by Pure Silk and will be played May 23-26 on the Ocean Club Golf Course at the Atlantis Resort.  The tour is also expected to announce a new event in Beijing, bringing the Asian event schedule up to five.

After bombing a tee shot 355 yards in the finals, Eric Lastowka, a longtime engineer for Titleist, won the Senior Division of the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship in Mesquite, Nev.

For the last 16 years, Eric Lastowka has worked as an environmental engineer in Titleist’s ball manufacturing plant in Brockton, Mass. Now he is a world champion.

Participating in the Senior Division of the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship for the first time, Lastowka beat 63 division qualifiers to become this year’s Longest Senior Driver with a 355-yard poke.

According to numerous real estate sources in the Palm Beach Gardens area, Rory McIlroy has signed a contract to purchase a $10 million, 10,000-square-foot home in the Old Gate community of Jupiter across the street from the Bear’s Club where he is a member.

The home, built in 2012 and owned by developer Christian Demers, has six bedrooms, nine baths, a gym, backyard putting green and deepwater dock.

Adam Scott was thrilled to finally win the Australian Masters, a tournament he has watched since he was small boy. 

Announcers on Australian television were equally thrilled to have one of their own charging to victory in the final round. 

Always prone to witty metaphors, one of the announcers during Saturday's third round said, "Adam Scott has the Miss Venezuela of golf swings."  

With no further explanation or follow up, it was left up to the viewer to decide what that meant. The picture above should help.
