8 things to know from an entertaining 2019 Senior PGA Championship

COMING FROM BEHIND

Ken Tanigawa, like Paul Broadhurst did in 2018, won the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship playing in the penultimate group. Prior to that, the KitchenAid Senior PGA Champion had emerged from the final group each year from 2014-17.

FROM ROTY TO KITCHENAID SENIOR PGA CHAMPION

Ken Tanigawa became the fourth consecutive KitchenAid Senior PGA Champion to share the distinction of winning the PGA TOUR Champions Rookie of the Year: Paul Broadhurst (2016 Rookie of the Year, 2018 Champion); Bernhard Langer (2008, 2017); and Rocco Mediate (2013, 2016). Tanigawa earned the honor a season ago in 2018.

TANIGAWA BESTS A FEW OF THE BEST

Ken Tanigawa (277) edged out Scott McCarron (278), Paul Broadhurst (279) and Retief Goosen (280) to capture his first career major championship. Collectively, McCarron, Broadhurst and Goosen own 72 career professional victories, including five majors.

HORSESHOES AND HAND GRENADES

Sunday at Oak Hill, Scott McCarron finished runner-up in a senior major championship for the third time in his career. He also finished second in the 2017 Regions Tradition (T-2, five shots back of Bernhard Langer) and the 2016 Senior Open Championship (solo second, two shots back of Paul Broadhurst).

SUNDAY, BLOODY SUNDAY

After committing a total of two bogeys in his first three rounds of the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, Paul Broadhurst was stricken with four bogeys and a double bogey (No. 16) in Sunday's Final Round.

EAST COURSE FLASHES ITS FANGS

Only three players in the field finished under par at the 2019 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship (Ken Tanigawa -3, Scott McCarron -2, Paul Broadhurst -1). That's the fewest in this Championship since there were also three (Michael Allen, Larry Mize, Bruce Fleisher) in 2009 at Canterbury Golf Club.

FIRST-TIME MAJOR WINNERS

Four of the past five senior major championships have been captured by first-time senior major winners: David Toms (2018 U.S. Senior Open); Vijay Singh (2018 Senior Players Championship); Steve Stricker (2019 Regions Traditon); and Tanigawa (2019 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship). Miguel Angel Jimenez captured his second senior major title at the 2018 Senior British Open.

TRENDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR 2020 AT HARBOR SHORES

Making his fourth appearance in the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship this week, Scott McCarron has improved his finish each year: T-7 (2016), T-5 (2017), T-3 (2018) and 2 (2019).
