9 things to know heading into the 2019 Senior PGA Championship

REMEMBERING THE RYDER CUP

Oak Hill has hosted some of the biggest events in golf and the latest chapter is being penned via this week's KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. Of the 156 players in the field, seven played in the 1995 Ryder Cup, which was won, in comeback fashion, by Europe, 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. They are:

Five players in the field of this week's KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship competed in the PGA of America's initial Major Championship played at Oak Hill, the 1980 PGA Championship, which was won by Jack Nicklaus: Peter Jacobsen (finish: T-10), Jay Haas (T-50), Bob Gilder (T-55), Mike Reid (T-55) and Scott Hoch (MC).

BETHPAGE TO OAK HILL

Five players will tee it up at Oak Hill only a few days after competing in the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black: Craig Bowden, John Daly, Shaun Micheel, Jeffrey Schmid and Steve Stricker.
 
BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK

Micheel and Stricker are playing in their third major championship in three consecutive weeks: the Regions Tradition, PGA Championship, and this week’s KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. Stricker claimed the first Major of his career at the Regions.
 
A TRIO OF CHAMPIONS

Defending Champion Paul Broadhurst will begin his title defense playing with 2017 winner Bernhard Langer and 2016 champion Rocco Mediate. Langer is making his first appearance in this Championship since his victory, as he missed last year at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan, due to his son’s graduation. Mediate missed the cut the year he defended his title.
 
RUNNER-UP TO CHAMPION? A RARE FEAT

2018 runner-up Tim Petrovic will look to accomplish what hasn’t been done in 58 years. Paul Runyan hoisted the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy in 1961, the year after he finished in second place. Four others have also accomplished the feat: Gene Sarazen (1954), Jock Hutchison (1947), Eddie Williams (1942) and Otto Hackbarth (1940).
 
JEFFREY SCHMID, IOWA CITY, IOWA

The PGA Teaching Professional at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville, Iowa, Jeffrey Schmid is having one of the rarest golf tours a golfer could have, and it’s all taking place in New York. Last week, Schmid competed in the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York. It was his first major appearance. This week, he makes his debut in the 80 th KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. Schmid, 50, is a former University of Iowa four-time letter-winner; an assistant coach for the Hawkeye men’s golf team (1991-2008), a former volunteer assistant coach for the University of Missouri men’s team (2013), the Tigers’ women’s program (2015-16) and Stetson University women’s team (2009-11).
 
Schmid earned his way into both fields by finishing tied for seventh at last October’s PGA Senior Professional Championship and tied for eighth in the PGA Professional Championship in Bluffton, South Carolina. Schmid was tied for 109th place after the first round of the latter event when he shot 75, but moved up in each subsequent round. His 67 was the low final round and sent him to Bethpage Black.

KITCHENAID FAIRWAY CLUB

Live local and celebrity chef demonstrations kick off tomorrow in the KitchenAid Fairway Club. Head over to see Chef Stephanie Izard at 1:00 p.m. and Radio Social’s Chef Steve Eakins at 2:30 p.m. KitchenAid Chef Chris Covelli will also be demonstrating various dishes throughout the day. Also, new to the Championship this year, KitchenAid and New York Kitchen are hosting a Cooking on the Course event tomorrow evening. Attendees will take part in hands-on cooking classes and dinner in the KitchenAid Fairway Club.
