As the Tournament Director for the annual PGA TOUR tournament for the past 18 years, I have seen Torrey Pines blossom into a world class golf venue deserving of the accolades it received for hosting the 2008 US Open. Torrey Pines oceanside vista are incredible with the South Course being extremely challenging and the North Course giving the golfer a great alternative if they do not want to tackle the difficult South. The year round conditions of the courses have improved greatly over the past eight years following the Rees Jones renovation of the South Course. Torrey Pines is one of San Diego's jewels and one course that a golfer should put on their list of courses they have played.

I played Torrey Pines South in Dec. 2002, just before my 55 birthday. It was a beautiful day and was able to walk on as a single (Cost at that time was $65 mid-week). Had an opportunity to meet an interesting individual from Scotland. The course was in reasonable shape for the time of year and with clear weather we could take advantage of the spectacular views. The greens were a bit thin, but that's the only complaint I have. I was able to checkoff another top 100 course from my list. Only another 95 to go :-)

I played Torrey Pines in September of 2009. I was very disappointed with the condition of the course. I played both the South and North course. I thought the North course was in better shape than the South.

I played the course a week before the Lady professional golfers came into to play a tournament.

I thought the course was over rated and over priced. The only good thing that came out of the experience is that I can say I played "Torrey Pines."

Amendment: I didn't realize the price had gone up so much. I think I paid about $50 in 2003. After reading others, I can't endorse my "great value" comment. Which gave it an extra star before. Key attraction being able to compare to how the pro's play it....

I played both the South & North courses as a single back in January 2003. It was wonderfully convenient for me as I got on within very reasonable timeframe. The price was great too.

The South Course was certainly worth while (North too), but I can't say it ranks high on a memorable scale. I almost aced 3, but they changed that. 13, 14, 16 and 18 I recall the most (they get good TV coverage though). 12 on TV looks like it should be memorable, but the ocean doesn't have nearly the presence as at Pebble Beach. The condition holds up well to the number of rounds. Greens were typical bumpy somewhat slow Poa Annua. Key being manage your expectation and enjoy it for what it is, don't let it bother you. This was the best thought I took onto Pebble Beach, yes greens weren't great but experience was tremendous. I didn't do that at Tory, so I was unhappy about a couple 3-5 footers not going in.... couldn't have been me???

It's definitely worth playing and is a great value. Plus it's fun to watch how the pro's play it after you've played it.

Torrey Pines has been ranked as one of the top courses in the U.S. by Golf Magazine's panel of experts.

Thanks to Bethpage Black and Harding Park, municipal courses are back in vogue as venues for big-time tournaments.

The granddaddies of the genre remain the North and South courses at Torrey Pines near San Diego. Rees Jones toughened the South in anticipation of the 2008 U.S. Open, adding 28 bunkers and more than 500 yards, and turning a good test into a 7,607-yard monster.

The North is a more manageable 6,874 yards from the tips. Both tracks are used in the Farmers Insurance Open every January, though the South pulls solo duty for the weekend.

Most tee times are made by calling 619-570-1234 up to seven days in advance.
