This course has many trees that line the fairways and there are hills that may cause uneven lies. Water hazards come into play on three holes. Donald Ross was particularly proud of his bunkering, notably on holes #12 (par 3) and #13 (par 4). This club was originally founded in 1895 and has been listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the U.S. Babe Zaharias won the 1954 U.S. Women's Open on this course and Hollis Stacy won the same tournament here in 1984. Salem Country Club hosted the 2001 U.S. Senior Open, won by Bruce Fleisher.
