This is a little gem of a course. It's not very long, at 6064 yds off the whites, which contribotes to it's 69.5 rating, but has a fun format of 6 par 3s, 6 par 4s and 6 par 5's. Most of the par 5s are reachable in 2 for an average golfer. The name of the course derives it's name from the gentle valley that the course envelopes. Over half the holes have elevated tees, with many of the tougher holes having elevated greens. There is only one fairway bunker but all the greens are protected by bunkers. There is some lateral water and a few small steams to cross. At first glance, the course looks to be quite easy, and long straight hitters will probably post good scores, but the course can be a devil if you find the rough. Although the rough is not left too long, it is thick, so expect to spend a couple of minutes looking for your ball even if you saw exactly where it landed. The course has many old and strategically placed trees to penalize less ideally placed shots as well as younger trees planted in the rough to take away simple recovery approach shots to the greens. The score card says the slope for the whites is 125, and the diabolical greens probably contribute to this. These greens are tough to read. One in particular has a putt that looks to break up hill and I mean by a couple of feet, with a long apparently straight put that will break 8 feet! The golden tip for these greens is that the ball will always break towards the nearest stream, even if the stream is 2 holes away. The valley apparently creates an optical illusion as the backdrop to reading the greens. Other than that the greens are medium sized and make for a good target. The toughest hole looks relatively easy. 455 yard par 4, straight away. Hit your best drive of the day down the middle and you could run into a stream at the end of the fairway. Be on the fairway either on the left or right side and you have to go around a couple of big trees that frame the approach to an elevated , two tier green protected by 3 bunkers. A par is earned here.
I highly recomend this course to anybody coming to the Lake of the Ozarks. Not as tough as many courses here, nor as expensive, it will let your handicap travel well, as there are no "gimmick" or trick holes.
