For Women: it starts at address

The setup position for any golfer is extremely important. What we have to factor into the setup is that everyone is build differently and we have to honor the the uniqueness that every person brings to the tee. Women have certain physical attributes that have to be addressed. One thing women often must contend with are wide hips. Women need to match their stance to the width of their hips -- even if that means wider than the shoulders. I see women all but falling over when they set up to the width of the shoulders but not to the hips. The second attribute is chest size. And men with large stomachs or chests should pay attention here, too. Any time you have a restriction, you have to find a way to get around it and adapt it to get efficiency of swing. People with large fronts need to adjust with their arms out on top of chest or stomach so it doesn't become an obstruction or intrusion during their swing. This will help their swing flow a whole lot smoother and their arms, shoulders and torso can work better together. With the chest or stomach under your arms, you can keep your swing on the same plane. What this position may mean is that they have a more compact and efficient swing. In most cases, they will tend not to take the club back to a parallel position. Another consideration for anybody -- but certainly people of different sizes and shapes --is to get clubs that fit properly. Those folks with the large fronts may need a longer shaft that is a better extension of their arms now that their arms are on top of the chest.
