Myrtle Beach named top US golf destination

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Golf.com has released its Reader's Choice Awards and Myrtle Beach dominated the domestic travel contests, taking the top spot in three categories.

The Strand was No. 1 in the categories of best U.S. golf destination, best buddies trip destination and best value destination.

Nearly 6,000 people voted from across America and rated their favorites in a number of categories including resorts, airlines, hotel chains, rental car brands, etc.

In the Best U.S. Golf Destination category, Myrtle Beach was followed in order by Southern Oregon (the Bandon Dunes area); Gaylord, Mich.; Central Oregon (Bend and Sunriver); and Montgomery/Auburn-Opelika, Ala., which features much of the Alabama Golf Trail.

In the best value destination category, Myrtle Beach was followed in order by Montgomery/Auburn-Opelika, Ala.; Gaylord, Mich.; the Florida Panhandle/Alabama Gulf Coast; and San Antonio.

In the best buddies trip destination, Myrtle Beach was followed by Southern Oregon; Gaylord, Mich.; Las Vegas; and Pinehurst, N.C.

Over six weeks on Golf.com and through the site's social-media channels, traveling golfers were asked to rate their favorites in 24 categories. The survey was completed by readers of Golf.com, SI Golf+ and SI Golf+ Digital from Dec. 18 to Feb. 6 and was administered by Marketing & Research Resources, Inc., based in Frederick, Md.

Participants were asked to rate only destinations and resorts that they had visited in the last three years. For a domestic destination or resort to qualify for the rankings, it needed to receive a minimum of 100 ratings.

Myrtle Beach is No. 6 in the Most Dreamed About destinations and wasn't in the top 10 for golf destinations for families.
