Open champ Tiger punches another ticket to Poipu Bay

Newly crowned Open Champion Tiger Woods will attempt to add to his record six titles in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in November when he joins Masters Champion Phil Mickelson, U.S. Open Champion Geoff Ogilvy and the winner of the PGA.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Last year, Tiger Woods romped to his sixth title in seven appearances at the hardest event in golf for which to qualify -- the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. With his recent successful defense of his Open Championship title, Woods earned the opportunity to defend his title in the season-ending showcase of major champions, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Poipu Bay Golf Course and Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa in Hawaii.

Woods, the all-time PGA Grand Slam of Golf victory leader with six titles, will be joined in the elite foursome by Masters Champion Phil Mickelson, U.S. Open Champion Geoff Ogilvy and the winner of next month's PGA Championship, which will be played Aug. 17-20 at famed Medinah Golf Club outside Chicago.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is a 36-hole event televised by TNT, which will be broadcast to a worldwide audience of 89 million U.S. homes and an international audience of more than 100 countries in a prime-time telecast.

This year's major champions will compete on the 7,123-yard, par-72 Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout that has yielded some of golf's most memorable shot-making moments of the past several years.

Woods earned a berth in last year's PGA Grand Slam of Golf through a Masters victory, and capped his year by posting a 64 at Poipu Bay for a seven-stroke victory over Mickelson, the 2005 PGA Champion, U.S. Open Champion Michael Campbell and three-time major champion Vijay Singh.

In 2004, Mickelson followed his Masters victory by posting a career-best and event-record 59.

This year's purse is $1.25 million with the winner receiving $500,000, second place $300,000, third place $250,000 and fourth place $200,000.

Should a player win more than one major championship this season, the foursome will be completed through a Major Champions Points List composed of past major champions who compete in the current year's majors.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary, The PGA of America was founded in 1916, and is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession. The Association is comprised of more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf.

Tickets to the PGA Grand Slam of Golf are available to purchase at 1-800-PGA-GOLF (742-4653), or online at www.PGA.com.
